name is apt, for Marshland is by Valkyrian from Malaria, by Quarantine from Minsk, by Martian. The Grand National Hurdle winner Carinthia is out of Minsk. Vaals, with limited_ opportunities, has sired some very smart gallopers. Sire’s First Classic
Philcourt, the winner of the Avondale Guineas, was bred by his owner, Mr G. Courtney, and is by Philamor from the Romeo mare Lady Marie. He is thus a half-brother to those good performers Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde, and Gay Sheik. He had 12 races as a two-year-old, winning two handicaps, but he raced well into the autumn, and was second in his last start as a two-year-old. With Russian Ballet second to Philcourt, it does not make the Wanganui form high class, but the season is early yet. Philcourt’s breeding, however, suggests that he should go on improving. Unfortunate Clash
The’South Canterbury Jockey Club is placed in an extremely awkward predicament by the decision to hold the General Election on Saturday, October 15. No Saturday date appears to be available until the autumn, unless a clash with some ofher South Island fixture'is sought. It has been suggested that ,the meeting could be held on a Thursday, but figures covering the last two or three seasons show that the difference between the gate receipts and tatalisator percentages for a Thursday and a Saturday are not less than £SOO. An attempt to race on a Thursday would be risking mss, which would be very heavy m the event of the weather being unfavourable.
Evidence of Staying Two horses on Saturday successfully bridged the gap between, hacks and open' class, Tidewaiter in the Avondale Cup and Happy Landing in the Carnarvon Gold Cup at' Foxton. Tidewaiter has made substantial improvement lately, and will be one of the early fancied candidates for the New Zealand Cup. He is brect to stay, being by Tidal (sire of Floodtide) from Ballymoy 11., who was bred m Ireland. Happy Landing is also bred to stay, and it was due to staying on so well that he beat Quadroon at the right end. He is by Siegfried from Tressida, so he can claim relationship to some first-class horses bred by Mr J. S. McLeod, including Runnymede, Raasay, My. Own, and Simba.
TROTTING NOTES
Reminders Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s second spring meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Two trotting events will be decided oh each day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting to be held to-day and on Saturday,
The Wellington Trotting Club will hold its spring meeting, at Hutt Park on Saturday. . Acceptances for the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting will close on Monday. Bracketed Horses
Horses that will be bracketed on the totalisator at Geraldine to-day include: — Geraldine Trot Handicap: Axspear and Warwick, trained by R. B. aerry, and Dancing Pirate and Sterling Pointer, from J. Bell’s stable. Stud News
Mrs M. J. Rooney’s mare, Marie Celeste, who raced with some success on Canterbury tracks two years ago, recently foaled twins (a colt and a filly) to the Southland stallion, Quite Sure, The filly died, but the colt is reported to be doing well. A Progressive Club The popularity of the Methvem Trotting Club is shown in the big list of nominations received for its meeting to be held,on October 1, and it is a popularity that has been well earn f“’- Ar is. not so long ■ since Methven changed over from galloping to the light harness sport, and in its short existence it has had to face very many difficulties. These it.has overcome in splendid style, and while it has not been able to make all the progress its members have desired, it is .hardly handicapped by the paucity of totalisator permits. If in the course of time extra permits are granted, Methven should be one of the first clubs to be considered. It is pleasing to note the excellent support accorded for the coming meeting, which should be one of the most successful in its history. The officials are energetic, and have a good idea of what is required in the correct running of a, race meeting. The Methven Cup"
The Methven Cup. a 4min 37sec class two miles race, will carry a stake of £330, and with all but one horse handicapped within 24 yards of the limit, the ■ event should be a most exciting, one. Casanova is ; the one horse in the race set to give, away 48 yards, and anything he has done Within the last 12 -months does not suggest he is capable of such a task. On 24 yards is a very good pa'cer in Colonel. Grattan, whose consistency has. been a feature of his racing. There is real strength on the 12 yards handicap, and Nell Grattan, Morewa, Donor, Ferry Post, Belle Grattan, and Ace Pot are all capable of fast times over the long journey. On the limit, too. there is real quality in Dark Hazard, Twenty Grand Philario, and Wynan. The acceptances will be taken up to Monday next, and a good response is assured. Southland Notes
A Southland correspondent of “The Press" sends, the, following:— ■ The half-sister by Llewellyn to Grand Mogul in W. Cosgrove's stable will race under the. name of Aspirant. She has not looked back in her work, and will make her first appearance at Gore next month. It is unfortunate for her owner, Mr W. D. McLeod, that she was not entered for the Winton and Wyndham three-year-old classics this season, as she is more 'advanced in her preparation than most of the others engaged. A high opinion is held of the Llewellyn filly, and she should soon . win her way from the novice ranks.
H. H. Booth is working . Walter Gay and a three-year-old filly by Rey de pro from Vasiliki. The Rey de Oro filly will race under the name of Orovale, and she is .engaged in the Winton Juvenile .Stakes. Walter Gay’s form -last season was of a good standard; and he is just the type to carry bn. 'The same owner has registered a ■ two-year,-old colt by Rey de Oro

A Similarity. . The inclusion of Garonne and Gironde (both by Gascony) in a race, such .as at Geraldine to-day, will no doubt lead to much confusion, as the general 1 inclination will be to pronounce both names, alike* . Garonne is' pronounced “Ga-ron,” and .is the pame of a river in Gascony, and Gironde, pronounced “Jirond,” is the hame'ofa town in the same French province. ACCEPTANCES
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WANGANUI, September 21. The Marten Jockey Club has received the following acceptances for its meeting on Saturday:—
from Queen Dulce, and he will race as Wise Choice. He is a big colt for his age, and is bred on sound lines as his dam was by Wrack front Wild Queen (a half-sister to Logan Chief). Queen Dulce has also left Happy Go Lucky, Anna Wong, and Royal Bond. The three-year-old, Jack_ Bond, impressed in a work-out with Bright Voyage during the week. He gave a clean exhibition of pacing* and his trainer. J. McLennan, is well pleased with the progress he has made. The half-brother to Toorak will be given a race or two before contesting the. Winton Juvenile Stakes. _ The death, occurred during, the week of Lady Freeman, a useful winner of a 1 few seasons back, whose successes included an Invercargill Cup. She was due to foal to Sandydale. . Vice-Regal will in future do his racing in the North Island, as he has been sold to an Aucklaod owner, and will be shipped north this week. The halfbrother to Dark Hazard has been given plenty of time, anc* has raced on only five occasions. He beat a useful field in hollow fashion at the Winton meeting last Christmas, while he has also three other placings to his credit. He has ability, and may race to advantage in the north. . It is understood that Embark, who is still owned in Southland, will be returned to Southland shortly. Since being sent to Canterbury he has not raced up to expectations, and it is intended to spell him for a time. Hoyle is one of the most improved workers in Invercargill. J. McLennan has put in a good deal of time on the Jack Potts gelding, who looked a hopeless proposition at one stage of his career. He now works along quietly, and if he continues. this improvement he may yet live up to his excellent blood lines. . " ' ... Eglinton is to be given another trial by A. L. Budge, who is also working Nelson’s Guard and. Sea Mark. As a two-year-old,. Eglinton worked well enough to warrant him being sent to Canterbury, but Me was returned before being rac.ed. He has shaped only moderately in his races in Southland, but the spell he has had may have improved him. Nancy Guy wilL also join up with this team shortly. The Adioo Guv mare raced well as a three; year-old last season, and is one who will not experience much difficulty in accounting for ,a, maiden., field when ready. V ■ . A newcomer in work at Winton is a half-sister by Adioo Guy to Dewey Cloud, who was killed a short time back. The Adioo Guy mare, who will race as Irish Guy. is now in her sixth year, and has not been worked previously. In the same stable. Waterloo Direct, a four-year-old novice by Wellington Direct from Trixie Bell, has been shaping well. .
