Mrs Leslie Wilson (Dunedin), who is the guest of Mrs J. D. Fairhurst, Papanui road, will leave for the south on .Monday.

Mrs J. Rose (Anama), who has been visiting her daughter,' Mrs R. G. Tunnicliff, Karamea, has returned to her home.

At the club rooms of the Catholic Women’s League yesterday afternoon Mrs Cecil Wood addressed members of the league on the work of the Plunket Society. Miss M. O’Connor presided and thanked Mrs Wood for her interesting and informative address.

Mrs E. G. Kerr (Timaru), who is visiting Christchurch, will return home to-morrow accompanied by Mr Kerr; who will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington to-morrow morning. , Mrs A. Duthie (“Moturata,” Feilding) is visiting Christchurch on her way to Greymouth, where she will spend some weeks with her daughter, Mrs J. Goodbehere. Mrs G. C. Broughton (Invercargill), who has been visiting her mother, Mrs H. W. Royds, “Hambleden,” Bealey avenue, has returned home.

Miss Mary Hardy (Napier), who arrived at Wellington from England recently, is the guest of Mrs M. Comerford, Sumner. Mrs C. Cook (Te Awamutu), who has been visiting Mrs A. Dale, Albury, and Mrs .J. C. Macaulay, Mount Nessing, has left on her return north.

1 Mr and Mrs Ivan Wood (Beverley street), who left some months ago for Europe via the East, .will .leave hext month by the Orion on their return journey to Christchurch. They have been for a Norwegian cruisp on the Orion and 'spent 10 weeks motoring in England and Scotland.

Chidgey, who this year resigned the - position of secretary of the Mayor’s, ’Coal and Blanket Fund Cohihiitfee, ;; was met yesterday by members of the committee and sev-, era!; former Mayors and presented with, a gold wristlet. watch and .a. radiator. Mrs J. A. Ayres, who left for England some time ago to, visit her mother, whom she had not seen for 25 years, will leaive on November 11 for her return journey to New Zealand.

Miss Dorothy J. Walton .(Timaru), who left early this year for England, will return by the Orford in November. ’ With her brother, Miss Walton spent a fortnight motoring in Scotland; with Miss M. Stuart Stevenson (Dunedin) she toured in Central Europe; with Miss Raymond (Timaru) she motored in the south of England, and now she and Miss N. Bond (also of Timaru) have gone together to Paris. Miss Walton has also had a motor trip through Devon and Cornwall. ’

Last Thursday Captain and Mrs J. J. Cameron left London for New Zealand by the Rangitiki, and will be away for six months. Captain Cameron was formerly in command of the Remuera. In recent years he has been assistant county commissioner for sea scouts for Surrey. Mrs C. Niven Forrest (Monck’s Spur) is spending a few weeks in Geraldine.

. Dr. Helen Bakewell (Wellington) returned'recently from a holiday in Germany and the Austrian Tyrol with Miss YVbnne Champtaloup. Dr. Bakewell has now taken up her appointment as assistant maternity ■and 'child welfare officer to the Metropolitan Borough of' Lewisham. Miss Betty Morrison , (Christchurch) has left for New Zealand via Canada. For some considerable time she was on the staff of a wellknown school at Eastbourne.

Misses Yvonne and Denise Watson (Merivale), who have been visiting England, are returning to New Zealand by the Mataroa, due in Auckland on October 6. ■ Mrs TolertonTHamilton, whose marriage to Mr Arthur Kirkham Hamilton. took place recently at the Chprch of St. Lawrence Jewry, London. left England by the Mataroa on September 2 for a short visit to friends in New Zealand. Mrs Hamilton was formerly Miss Miriam Tolerton, of Morrinsville, and Mr Hamilton is a barrister at law of the Inner Temple.

Miss M. Barnett, assistant-matron at the Christchurch Hospital, was yesterday appointed matron of the Masterton Hospital. There were 18 applicants.—Press Association. Mrs Barbara Ayrton Gould, widow of Gerald Gould, poet and essayist, has been selected as prospective Labour candidate "for Wednesday, Staffordshire. Mrs Gould is vice-chair-woman of the Labour Party. She is a daughter of the late Professor W; E. Ayrton, F.R.S., and her mother was a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.. Mrs Gould, who has one son, was at one time publicity manager of the “Daily Herald,” of which her husband was associate editor from 1919 till 1922. Kenya’s first woman legislator has just been elected to the Legislative Council bf that African colony, famous for its coffee. She is Lady Sidney Farrar, sister of' an English peer, Lord Buckinghamshire, and widow ,of Captain Tom Farrar, who died in Kenya three years ago. Lady Farrar continued to run the hotel which her husband started at Kakamega after the gold rush there. She also runs a farm on Mau summit. A woman of considerable energy and resource, she works the farm herself and ploughs it. She is an excellent speaker.
