The Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works is expected to arrive in Christchurch on Saturday- On Tuesday he will inaugurate the Downlands water supply scheme at South Canterbury, which is expected to take two years to complete and which will supply water for an area of some 154,000 acres.
The Minister for Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) addressed a the Beckenham School last evening. He will return to Wellington 1 to-night.
Mr Philip B. Levy returned from the south yesterday.
Reference to the recent death of -Mr R. Nairn, who on several occasions acted as an assessor in the nurserymen’s dispute, was made at a sitting of the Conciliation Council yesterday by the Commissioner (Mr Sv Ritchie). A resolution of sympathy was passed by the council.
The Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. S. Barnett), Cr. J. W. Beanland, and the Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) left Christchurch yesterday afternoon for Invercargill to attend the funeral of the Mayor (Mr John Miller).
