SEALING OF ROAD REQUESTED
AREA SUBJECT TO PETITION
WAIMAIRI COUNCIL’S
ATTITUDE
That it would not be reasonable for the Waimairi County Council to spend a large sum on sealing, a road in an area where ratepayers were»'petitioning for transference to the Christchurch City Council was suggested by the chairman of the council (Cr.. F. S. Scott) last evening, when a .deputation from the Richmond Burgesses’ Association asked for various works to be undertaken. The chief request was for the sealing of Banks avenue from the Dallington bridge l to Cooper’s road. It also asked for a new bridge over the Dudley creek. ; Cr. Scott remarked that if the petition was dropped or came to nothing the position would be different. • “Then I take it that we should endeavour to have the petition withdrawn?” said the leader' of the deputation (Mr S. B. Smith). The chairman: Yes.
The deputation, whose members were Mr Smith, and Messrs J. J. Rowe, J. M. Preston, and H. H. Boundy, considered that the bridge over the Dudley creek was in a.dangerous condition, and urgently needed replacement. A deputation from the Hillmorten Burgesses’ Association, comprising Messrs C. Beckingsale, W. Craig, A; G. Sinrirhonds, J. Sweeney, and A. R. Heaven, asked for ’attention to channelling to avoid flooding, and also asking for the provision of high-pressure water supply. Because of the recent legal decision against the Christchurch City Council in an action for damages resulting from a collision with a power pole, the county inspector recommended that the council should consider the advisability of shifting a pole at the corner of Prestons road and North road. It was left to the works committee to inspect the site and report to the council.
