SPEED LIMITS THOUGHT IMPRACTICABLE

DEPARTMENT REPLIES TO SCHOOL COMMITTEES

It is not considered possible for special speed limits to be fixed for traffic passing schools, according ,to a reply received from the Government by the Dominion Federation of School' Committees’ Associations yesterday. The conference of the. federation was convinced that measures were necessary for the safety of schoolchildren, and it was decided to approach the Minister for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). The following remit;-moved by Mr A. A. Buckley (Auckland? .was carried:—“ That the Minister -for Transport be asked to amend the present regulations, which do not provide for a speed limit when passing " schools outside city ‘ limitE, and to'enforce a •afe' speed.” . : The reply of the Minister for Education to the. school comtoittees! sug-. gestion of a speed limit in school areas was as follows:—“ Notice boards have been put up. Barriers have also been erected outside some school-en-trances. The onus is now on motorists to drive with due regard for safety; Speed limits have been fixed for towns and boroughs, and it is ’not possible to'introduce further limits for schools.”
