PROPOSAL FOR LOAN Reticulation Of Amuri County NORTH CANTERBURY POWER BOARD Permission has been given the North Canterbury Electric Power Board to raise a loan of £38,850 for the further reticulation of the Amuri County provided the proposal is submitted to a poll of ratepayers. Advice to this effect was received from the Local Government Loans Board by the power board when it met yesterday. The term of the loan has been fixed at 25 years, with the rate of interest at 31 per cent., and the sinking fund at 2\ per cent. Mrs M. A. Ellen again urged that domestic rates should be reduced and moved that the sub-committee's recommendation about the reduction In domestic rates should: be approved. She said that the present domestic rating was far too high and that Consumers were entitled to receive some portion of the £2OOO profit made by the board during the last'two years. Mrs Ellen's motion was seconded by Mr A. M. Carpenter, but was lost by eix votes to four. The engineer-secretary (Mr A. Buckingham) reported that the constru:tion of the Greta line was completed. Fairly extensive alterations were made at Woodend beach to supply a new milking installation and provide better regulation of voltage to consumers 1 : that locality. Additional services had been run at Oxford, Stewart's Gully, and Kainga. . Two shipments of poles were received during the month, Mr Buckingham added. The consumption of units for . e month was given as follows (figures for the corresponding period last year being in parenthesis):—August, 1938, 718.400 units (625.800), 1663 k.v.a. (1485), 1655 k.w. (1449). CHEVIOT DEVOTIONAL CLUB The Cheviot Devotional and Social Club met recently. The Rev. R. Leishman presided. It was agreed to start practising for the youth day services in October. The Rev. W. A. Beaumont gave a talk on photography, the taking and developing of photographs, and taking of colour photographs and moving pictures, illustrating his remarks with exhibits of photography. CARD EVENING HELD AT SPRINGSTON There was an excellent attendance at a flag 500 evening arranged by the Springston Cricket Club. Successful players were Mrs McLaughlan and Messrs P. Riordan and K. Moore. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs Templeton and Messrs W. and M. Teragieton,
SPRING FLOWER SHOW EXHIBITION AT RANGIORA Exhibits of a high quality were entered in each section of the annual spring flower show of the LoburnAshley Women's Institute, which was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School. Rangiora, yesterday. The show was opened by the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler). The premier bloom, a flower of remarkably fine texture and beauty, was displayed by Miss J. Croft, of Loburn. Special prizes were won as follows: Homecraft (cushion worked in wool), Mrs M. Henry; most entries in decorative section, Mrs W. Macann; most entries in cookery section, Mrs Hinks; In the homecraft section for children Shona Hill won the special prize. The judges were as follows: —Flowers, Mr T. D. Lennie; homecraft, Mrs T. Bullock; cookery, Mrs Colin Mcintosh; preserves, Mrs J. Burns; cookery (children's section), Mrs E. Burns.
INFLUENCE OF HEREDITY ON CHILDREN ADDRESS AT RANGIORA Discussing in an address at Rangiora on Monday evening the influence of heredity on children, Miss Doreen Dolton, lecturer in child psychology, under the auspices of the Association for Country Education, said that the child's ability to grow physically, men' tally, and socially was determined by its inheritance. Miss Dolton said that in her next lecture she would discuss the influence of environment on children. ODDFELLOWS' LODGE MEETING AT RANGIORA Officers and members of the Loyal Cust and Ohoka lodges visited the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., at its meeting on Tuesday night. Bro. M. J. O'Connor, N.G.. presided. An invitation was accepted to visit the Loyal Woodend- Lodge on October 13, At the conclusion of the business visitors were entertained at flag 500.
CATHOLIC BALL AT RANGIORA
A record attendance is expected for the annual Catholic ball, which will be held in the Parish Hall, RangiOra* tomorrow night. One of the most popular functions of the year, the ball in former Seasons has attracted hundreds from all over Canterbury.

Mr H. G. Dalley presided over the annual meeting of the Ellesmere Cricket Sub-AssoCiation, held on Monday evening, when it was decided to open the district competition on October 1. The report stated that 10 teams had competed in last season's competition, which was won by Tai Tapu, with Doyleston runners-up. Great difficulty had been met in fielding representative teams, and it was hoped that the position would improve this season

SHORTAGE OF PLAYERS AT SOUTHBRIDGE
NO ENTRY TO BE MADE IN COMPETITIONS
Because of a shortage of players the Southbridge Cricket Club decided at its annual meeting that it would not enter a team in the Ellesmere SubAssociation's competition this season, but that friendly matches should bo played whenever possible. Sympathy Was expressed with Mr W. M. Nidd and family in their bereavement.
The report stated that the club had experienced a lean year, the revenue falling short of the expenditure by £4 5s lid. Last season's batting average had been won by L. Ebert with an average of 39.8, W. T. Nidd being runner-up with 38.9. L. Lambie had won the bowling average, taking 33 wickets at a cost of eight runs each. L. Ebert was runner-up with 17 wickets for 13 runs. A. Lambie had won a bat given by the president (Mr j W. H. Abbott) with an average of j 17.6 runs. j There was no election of officers. FARMERS' UNION HORORATA BRANCH MEETING Mr H. T. Richards presided at the monthly meeting of the Hororata branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. Members of the branch and the Young Farmers' Club joined to read the first part of a discussion course on farming problems, entitled "The Future of New Zealand Agriculture," prepared by Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, for the Workers' Educational Association. . SCHOOL SPORTS KAIKOL7RA AND BLENHEIM SCHOOLS MEET The annual football and basketball games between teams from Blenheim and the Kaikoura schools were held under the organisation of tl>e Kaikoura School Sports Association. The Kaikoura girls were far superior to the Blenheim girls in the basketball match played at the Convent. The visiting team lacked the combination of the Kaikoura team, the latter winning by 34 goals to 1. At the Takahanga Domain a challenge match was played between Oaro and Aniseed. It was a very even and hard-fought game, Aniseed winning by 11 points to 9. Rugby The match between Kaikoura and Blenheim was very interesting, and at times exciting. There was no score by either side until just on call of time. Blenheim winning by 3 points to nil. HOCKEY AT KAIKOURA The last" game of this season was played by the Kaikoura Ladies' Hockey Club when it was beaten by a team from Oara by three goals to nil, after an exciting game. Mr E. A team from the Kaikoura Men's Hockey Club visited Kaiapoi during the week-end and played against the Kaiapoi Club. The visitors beat the home team by 6 goals to 3. Goals for Kaikoura were scored by C. Stewart (3), R. Harris, V. Barratt, and M. Reardon (one each).
ENTERTAINMENT GIVEN AT STYX
The Styx Presbyterian Young People's Club held a very successful variety entertainment recently. The programme included: "Military Scene," sketch; "Courtship under Difficulties"; "Nautical Scene"; broadcasting scene; sketch, "The New Mayor"; sketch, "Nature Abhors a Vacuum." Two oneact plays were presented. Mr Denis Jpaniel presented Mrs J. Marwick and Miss J. Nicol with posies.

PERSONAL NOTES i RANGIORA Mr F. H. Courage, of Amberley, was elected an honorary life member of the Amberley Racing Club at the annual meeting of the club recently. LAWN TENNIS SEASON OPENED AT HORORATA There was a good attendance at the Hororata tennis courts on Saturday afternoon. Mr P. Derrett, in declaring the season open, wished the club every success for the coming year. The open yankee tournament for women was won by Miss Janet Rich* ards of Windwhistle, and the men's tournament by Graham Williams. LAKESIDE CLUB MEETS I A healthy financial position was shown in the balance-sheet presented at the annual meeting of the Lakeside Tennis Club, the credit being £43 14s 7d. Mr H. DARFIELD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MEETING
The annual congregational meeting of the Darfield Presbyterian Church was held recently. The Rev. Dr. Paterson presided. The report and balancesheet showed a very satisfactory year Votes of thanks were passed to Mr D. Mulholland and Mr J. Reid for their work last year.
The report of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union wort showed a good credit for mission funds The following were elected to the church committee: Messrs G. Donald J. Green. S. Syme. J. H. Syme, G. Masterton, W. W. Mulholland. H. ' Gillanders, J. H. Reid, and Dr. C. E. Reid; secretary, Mr J. Reid; treasurer, Mr D. Mulholland: delegates to central committee, Messrs W. W. LABOUR PARTY MEETS AT OXFORD
The September meeting of the Oxford branch of the New Zealand labour Party was well attended. It was reported that the fortnightly euchre parties were resulting in Increased membership. Mr H. X. Denton's meeting at Coopers Creek had been well attended, and his reception had been cordial.
It was decided to ask Mr Denton to hold a meeting at View Hill, if possible.
