RISING OF RIVER BED

LOWER REACHES OF THE WAIMAKARIRI POSITION DISCUSSED BY HARBOUR BOARD The gradual rising of the river bed in the lower reaches of the Waimakariri river and the height of the river banks in case of floods were discussed at the monthlyfmeeting of the Waima- | kariri Harbour Board on Monday evening. The opinion was that with the gradual rising of the river, bed, the present banks were not high enough to prevent flooding. This had been- demonstrated when the water had backed up with a flood in the- main river about two years ago. It was decided to write to the Kaiapoi Borough Council, asking if it was prepared to join with the board in approaching the Waimakariri River Trust to discuss a scheme for the raising of the banks to prevent flooding in the borough. The chairman (Mr J. A. Mealings) presided. Other members -present were Messrs R. F. Joyce, A. S. Palmer, B. Leaver, and H. Rinaldi. The secretary of the Marine Department, Wellington, wrote about the removal of the signal staff, because of changes in the river, and asked to be supplied with a rough sketch, showing the new course of the river, and the proposed position of the signal staff. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman of the harbour committee, with power to act. The Canterbury Progress League wrote asking if the board would grant financial support towards the league funds. A grant of £1 Is was made. . The Town Clerk, Kaiapoi Borough Council, wrote advising that a committee comprising the Mayor, Crs. Brown and Stewart, had been set up by the council to investigate the possi-

bilities of amalgamation*. with the borough. It was decided that the deputation be received at next meeting of the board. The financial statement showed receipts since the last meeting, £314 6s 9d, the debit bank balance was £134 15s sd, and accounts passed for. payment £333 lis. Motions of sympathy were passed with the chairman and Mr H. O. Hills in their bereavements, and with the relatives of Mr Hector Mcintosh, » former member of the board.
