THE MANTLE OF SEDDON
to raa aaiTok o» ra» pseas. Sir,—The Labour Party persistently claims that it has inherited the mantle of Seddon. Richard John Seddon and John Ballance were Liberals. They may have been numbered among the seven devils of Socialism" by their .contemporaneous opponents; but neither they nor their successors in the Liberal regime ever claimed to be heading foi the Socialist State. The very essence of Liberalism is opposed to Socialism. Liberalism stood and still stands for the individual, for the safeguarding of his rights against the State. Socialism stood for and still stands for the subordination of the individual to the State. Those who set Socialism as their goal cannot in any circumstances claim to wear the mantle of Seddon. If they do wear it obviously it is as a disguise. Fundamentally Liberalism and Socialism are diametrically opposed, and actually, if anyone has the right to wear Seddon s mantle it is Adam Hamilton rather than Michael Savage.—Yours, etc., • LIBERALISM. September 20. 1938.
