The deputation consisted of tne pre- , sident of the centre (Mr J. Mackenge) tne vice-president (Mr V. G. Spiiier;, and the secretary (Miss D. Brown). The speakers for the deputation said"| that the replacement of the present % bath as a centennial memorial would | be a very sound project. A good deal a* was wanting in the Present bath, it was now well past its best there was room for improvement in the condition J of the water, for at the end of the day J there was a grave doubt whether toe water was fit for swimming, and tne $ pool was not big enough. It was con- J sidered that a.new bath would appeal , f to the people as a suitable centennial - memorial. - ;, Replying to the deputation, Mr Mac- 5 farlane said that baths «*-* mittee had been very concerned aBK,the state of the bath, and past councfjfef had for some time realised its encies. He realised that the deputa- s tion had a very strong case for im- .f provements, but the suggestion that a >. new bath should be built as a centen- ~ s nial memorial -would to some extent 'j be a matter for the council. The future „| of the museum project would depend:'? to a large extent on the response re- j ceived from various local bodies.-and 1\ the council would have to consider its - "* attitude in accordance with the amount of support forthcoming from outside--organisations. - "- ~s. The Government had no objectioruto'*a centennial memorial taking Ihe form-j of a swimming bath, the Mayor added, i and he thought a subsidy would be \, given by the Government. However, ; the matter would have to be considered , by the council, and he suggested that £ ■ the centre submit its representations in \ • , writing to the council. If that was , ' done the suggestion would be con-v;~ sidered in the near future. '%..
