RACING AND TROTTING

GERALDINE RAGES TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME The Geraldine Racing Club has received an excellent list of acceptances for the opening of its annual meeting ctt the Orari racecourse to-morrow, all of the fields being well-filled without any being unwieldy. Seven have been accepted for in the First; Hurdles, and on Ashburton form, The iSandwichman. who is certain to have; improved more than the others by his race, will have to.be again considered, and his most formidable opponents would appear to be Top Rank and Delrain.

The Ohapi Hack Handicap is " for non-winners, so that investors will ] have to rely on placed performances, i Auctor. Remembo, Sheeny, Nigella, and Royal Refrain have all earned place money, while Romarin has been responsible for some promising track ■work of late. The best supported may be Nigella, . Royal Refrain, and Romarin. . The Geraldine Cup has drawn a high-class field and the issue undoubtedly.appears very open. Made Money. Dunstan, and Petersham, the placed horses in the Ashburton Handicap, are in the list, and they should all be prominent again. Wine Card, winner over seven furlones at Ashburton, is an interesting candidate. She won the Ashburton Cup over the same distance in the autumn, and in her present order she will be once more prominent. Alma. Ponty, Milford. Last Refrain, Balmenter. and Lazybones comprise a solid lot. and both Travenna and Munsatoon will be seen to advantage if the track should become soft. The favourite division may be ronfirjed to Last Refrain. Dunstan, and Petersham. At -Ashburton on Saturday Dancing Pirate registered an attractive performance in running second to Pecunia and this form is good enough to suggest him a winner of the Geraldine Trot Handicap. Most onposition may be expected from Fragment and Tinker.

The hack class is strongly reprer*>nted in the field for the RaukaDuka Handicap, and speculation will be widely distributed. Again Ashburton form will be valuable to -follow, but newcomers in Garonne. Ilithyia. Kilrobe.: Gironde, Night Hawk, and Maori Maid will complicate matters. Gay Parade, whose success amongst the maidens at Ashburton involved him in a; rehandicao of 101b; will be put t? a ;seve're test, but he should again be prominent. The favourites may be Gav Parade. Dracula. and Garonne. A ..useful fi»ld of sr>rintprs • will parade in the Squatters' Handicap, and a fast run race should be recorded. Valmarch appears to be wpII placed vrith 8-0. and he w'ill keen his or-oon-•n*s 'busy Second Innings will be b*"«T suited by the distance than at Ashburton. and Cocksur« will be improved by his race, while has been gallor>imr wpII of late. The issue will T>rob=»bly be confined to thos» mentioned, and the best may r*» VaJmarch. Cocksure, and Second Innings. The Orari Trot Handicap will be contested by a reasonably small field. and o\*er a mile and a auartet Oasis should be capable of conceding 24 yards. Next in order may be PrivaMyrna Loy. The smallest field of the day will contest the Belfield Hack Handicap, but an interesting tussle should nevertheless be staged. Night. Dress is aprarently in the form expected of him through last season, and his orospects again look bright. Recollection and Ser*4mer will also carry strong support.. - The programme is as follows: TIBST HUKDLE HANDICAP, of £l4O.

SOUTHLAND NOTES

HORSES FOR ORARI fTHE PRESS Special Service.] INVERCABrGILL. September 20. R. E. McLellan will leave to-morrow for Geraldine, with Milford, Paladino Boswell, Doubleack, and Jedburgh. All five have done well and can.be expected to race prominently. "During the last week Boswell in particular has attracted attention. He has been in-fusing-much more dash into his work and in- a' gallop with Paladino on Saturday morning he beat him over half a mile. Boswell. who. is but of the imported Celerity 11, has furnished into one of the best looking horses at headquarters and although he is not engaged until the second day at Geraldine some interest will be shown in his appearance. Milford will have a big following in the Geraldine Cup as he is much improved since he ran a good fourth tc Monipere at-the Otago Hunt meeting. Milford has done a good amount of solid work during the last fortnight Paladino is better placed the second day. as he is engaged in the open'sprint on Thursday.: On the Saturday he will more than likely tackle the President's Handicap over a mile and 100 yards The longer journey will suit him better. • " , - Doubleack and Jedburgh are both novices. The former is a brother to Waitoru and half-brother to Trebleack, while Jedburgh is a sister to Corban. Both have shown plenty of ability in their work and are well forward. Doubleack may be the more likely of the .pair, although Jedburgr shaped promisingly in her first start at the Otago Hunt meeting. R. .Humphries will ride Milford and Jedburgh, and *'G. Barclay will be on Doubleack and Paladino.

> TURF GOSSIP Trains for Orari Train passengers for the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting to-morrow may be able to travel by the 8.35 a.m. express and return by the north-bound express. A special passenger train has been arranged for Saturday, leaving Christchurch at 0 a.m. and returning from Orari at 5.30 p.m. Track Work at Riccarton The weather was again favourable for training at Riccarton yesterday. The week-end rain benefited the tracks, which were becoming hard on top, and the trial grass provided excellent going. Fast work was somewhat restricted, many horses having had a race at Ashburton on Saturday: but there was plenty to interest trackwatchers. Some trainers, especially those with big teams, took advantage of the early opening of the tracks, but it is not expected that this arrangement will be popular with many trainers until next month. -.'-'' ■' ' The first to work before breakfast was Sovereign Lady, who went an easy half-mile in 55sec. and.her stable-mate Disdain raji .six furlongs comfortably in lmin lasec. .'•-.•• • . . . Trench Fight galloped a mile m lmin 44' l-ssec. the secor;d half in 52 3-ssec. Wild Chase drew attention' to his advanced order by reeling off half a mile in -49 2-ssec'. A , . . Keen Sight and Harwich took al l-ssec for half a mile, and Happy. Moments and Scuffle were given a useful working gallop over seven furlongs. Rebel Star broke away in front of Garonne at the start of a five-furlong task, and led him home in lmin 4sec. the first four in 49 3-sse6V Their stable-mate Asset sprinted three furlongs in 39sec. ' ~ . ' Night Dress was seen to advantage in covering six furlongs with Defaulter in lmin 17 3-ssec, the second three in 38 l-ssec. v

After, the Interval Sparkle and Colonel Rouge finished together at the end of.six furlong? in lmin 18 4-ssec. The best time over this distance was lmin 17sec by Nightcalm. who was assisted home by Great Baby,, the last four furlongs taking 50 3-ssec. : Other six furlongs tasks were . executed by Recollection and Flame Queen in lmin 17 4-ssec, Screamer and Gironde in lmin 18sec, Dracula in lmin 18 2-ssec, Romarin, in lmin .18 3-ssec, and Supreme ; Court Over Five ;.?ffi ■' Financiere and Potent were well clear of Great Bramble at the end of five' furlongs in lmin ssec. ' ■'• Night Hawk and Palmyra recorded lmin 3 2-ssec for this distance,.the last four ip ,49 2-ssec. '" ; : Smart Sprints ; . . "The best half-mile was credited to Kilrobe, who covered ' that distance along the back stretch in 48 2-ss.ec. Over the home half-mile, Gillie beat Tantivy in 49 l-ssec. The latter is a four-year-old colt by Hunting Song from Grey Eyes, by Greyspear, and appears to be the makings of a good galloper. The . Masquers der followed over the same ground in 49sec, and Second Innings finished in front of Lord Hawke and Wanda Robe in 50 sec, while Wako, in A. J. Martin's stable, recorded 49 4-ssec. Argentic showed that he had not suffered any ill-effects from his race on Saturday by striding over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, and Wine Card, who is to contest the Geraldine Cup. covered a mile in lmin 44sec, taking 52sec, for each half. Willie Win and Rousseau took lmin 47sec for a mile without being seriously ridden at any part. Rabble, joined:by Gay Parade at five furlongs, ran seven furlongs, in lmin 34 3-ssec, the last four in 51' 2-ssec.

Over -Hurdles Pipiwhauroa gave a dashing display over six hurdles, and > Sir Rosenor shaped satisfactorily over four hurdles. A Well-bred Pah; './^.^;v' Phalanx has rejoined the fast workers, and he sprinted three - furlongs yesterday, in fair. time. This Nightmarch gelding furnished a lot during his winter spell, and is.;one ..likely to win some good races this season. A three-quarters two-year-old brother to' him, a chestnut, has been broken in by F. Roberts, and was on the tracks for. the first time yesterday. He is by Night Raid from -Wink-;a-Feep, and. like PhaJanx,. is .to be, given plenty of time by bis owner, Mr DC Spehce, who will shortly, take him.back from .Roberts and ; train • him ■ himself along with Phalanx; A Good Looker -..''■ The .two-year-old ' Kobi. received . a knock in the Debutant Stakes at and it was decided that he would not accompany his stablemates Francis; Drake and Coronation to Auckland? for. the Avondale. meeting. Kobi, by Bulandshar from Lucinette, .was one- of the best-looking youngsters produced at Wangahui, and he should do better When more matured.

The I*ast Rites At the express wish of his many Melbourne friends, Keith Voitre is to be •' buried in Melbourne, and the funeral took, place yesterday. His parents, Mr.and Mrs E. F. Voitre, and his • brother Noel, left Palmerston North to connect with, the Wanganella for Sydney, and they went to Melbourne 4 by air.... ~ . A Qig Team ■■-/■■.., • "I have 21 horses in work and the stables are full, so that for the time being I-am unable to take any more," states the former Hawera trainer, J. Fryer, in correspondence with a New Plymouth friend. "Some that I consider good are Acheron, . Ppstarsis, Elahage, Koyal Order, and the Limorid —Anklet colt, who was bred by "Mr G; M; Currie. I think Heroic' Pride, I whom I train for the Hon. A. Croft, will be a good winner." >' I

METHVEN T.C.

HANDICAPS The following handicaps have been declared for the Methven Trotting Club's meeting on October 1:

Metropolitan Favourite

?.:. Royal Chief galloped his way into favouritism for the Metropolitan by his decisive and spectacular win in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick. says a Sydney correspondent. J.' Holt regarded Avenger as a certainty, but Royal Chief was too good. The luck of the' race was with Royal Chief, who jumped out first at the barrier and had a perfect run on the rails all the way. In the straight Young Crusader came out from the fence and E. Bartle shot Royal Chief through to victory. Avenger had been forced to go a trifle wide on the turn, but actually headed Royal Chief a furlong from home. In the final furlong Royal Chief we"nt two to one' to Avenger and finished brilliantly. He and Cooranga promise to dominate the Metropolitan to the exclusion of all others.

An Empty Honour Southern Blood's owner, Mrs P. M. Flan, has been notified by the New Zealand Racing Conference that her gelding has been awarded first placing in the Corunna Hurdles at the Wellington winter meeting last July, as a result of the disqualification of King Mestor. The notification also carries the. intimation that the stakes will be paid when they are recovered. • This is a case in which the honour is a very mixed blessing indeed. Southern Blood becomes winner of the race, but- his owner and supporters did not get the dividend.-And meanwhile the owner also" has not received the prizemoney, but the horse, with the (so far) empty Trentham honour, has gone up to only £lO off the hack margin for a hurdler. English St. Legrer . By- winning this - .year's St. Leger. Scottish Union scored where his sire, Cameronian. failed badly in Doncaster's classic race of 1931. Cameronian had won the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby in such convincing style that he was considered likely to have his name included with the select list of winners -of the "triple crown." He ruled. a firm favourite for the St. Leger. but proved a complete disappointment and saw all the field home. Scottish Union ran second to Pasch in the Two Thousand Guineas, and in the Derby he filled a similar position to Bois Roussel. Newcastle Winner

An easy winner at the recent Newcastle Cup meeting was Postman, a chestnut colt b» Defoe out of the Paper Money mare Brown Paper. Postman is owned by Mr M. Gearin, of Sydney, who paid 250 guineas for him at the Trentham sales. Amberley Racing Club A successful year was reported at the, annual meeting of the Amberley Racing Club. The balance-sheet showed a net profit of £149 9s 10d, and there was a membership of 82. An application to-hold the next race meeting on May 6 had been made, and the club had secured.a further lease of the Domain for seven-years. A motion oT sympathy with relatives in the death of the following was passed:—Sir Charles Clifford, Messrs G. N. McLean, Denis Chapman, F. G. Lewton, J. G. Macdonald, and -G. L. Rutherford. The following were elected members of the ground's committee:— Messrs A. P. Boyle, F. H. Courage, Jqhii Courage, G. M. Dixon, G. Fulton, D. C. Gardiner, H. D. Greenwood,' A. Parkinson, J. B, Starky, and J. M. Starky.

TROTTING NOTES A Reminder , , Nominations for the New Zealand Trotting Cup will close at 5 p.m. on September 30. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club's October meeting will close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Wellington T.C. There will be no unwieldy fields' at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday, but big fields are not necessary for the most exciting racing. Most of the horses engaged are trained in Canterbury, and represent a good improving class. Unhoppled Trotters Both events confined to unhoppled trotters will draw small fields* ariff in each the Addington -trained Sagamore will have a big following. This trotter performed well at New' Brighton, and the small fields will suit him. Unless strong opposition is offered by Tonee and Dollar Maid, it would not surprise to find Slrgamore winning both races for unhoppled trotters. Maiden Pacers

The Sharpe Handicap, like the Hutt Park Trial, is for maiden pacers, and in each race is engaged a particur larly promising horse in Mazaire from C. S. Donald's stable. By Jack Potts from Logan Chimes, Mazaire has yet to win a race, but he made a very good effort at Ashburton earlier in the year. He will probably be driven by R. Donald. Palomar, in this race, is a three'year-old by Grattan Loyal in R. B. Berry's stable, and showed a fair amount of speed in the Buller Handicap at, . the Westport Jockey Club's meeting held at Riccarton early in July. Another useful sort is Lady Vasclyne. trained by J. J. Kennerley. Silver Gratton is another of R. B. Berry's team. Horses that should play a prominent part in the two maiden races are Mazaire, Silver Gratton, and Lady Vasclyne.

Bollard Memorial The Bollard Memorial Handicap, with a field of nine, should be the race of the day, and interest will be added in the appearance of the Auck-land-trained Bexley Girl. R. B. Berry will be represented by the American pacer Fremont, while M. B. Edwards has possibilities in Philario and Twenty Grand. M. C. McTigue has withdrawn Fine Art in favour of his stable-mate Dark Hazard, 'and Marlene from C. S. Donald's stable and Three Bells are possibilities. It is a small field, but the class is even, and a great race should result. On present form, the favourites may be Philario, Dark Hazard, and Marlene. Three-year-olds

The Wellington Stakes, for three-year-olds, is a race that may provide a good rehearsal for the New Zealand Derby, to be decided at ton in November, although Special Edition, one of the favourites, is not engaged. His v next outing will be at New Brighton on October 8. The favourite will probably be Aldershot. who was second in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, while Revision and Rosalind Maid are good young pacers, with a future.

An Improver Otaua, who is engaged in the Railway Handicap, is a four-year-old gelding by Rey de Oro, from Logan Maid, and.is trained at Addington by L. O. Thomas. He has a lot of speed and =eems to have lost the waywardness that characterised his earliest racing. He is a distinct possibility in his Wellington engagement.

Sold for Auckland The Winton-trained pacer Vice Rega) has been sold to an Auckland owner and will be shipped north on Friday. He is a six-year-old gelding by Nelson Derby from Wild Nita (dam.ol Dark Hazard), and has done very little racing. He has started only five times for a first, two seconds,.and a thira, and can be improved a lot yet. Remarkable Stud Career

The death occurred last week of Misfortune, one of the best trotting producers ever at the stud in Southland. She was in her thirtieth year, and produced no- less than 16 foals, most of which won races. Misfortune did very little racing, and after being returned a winner, an early injury cut short her career. Eleven of her foals were fillies,-and her progeny was as follows:—Stirling McKinney, Miss Hector, Miss Adonis, Fortune Maid, Lady Alva, Fortune Chimes, Alva Lass, Misfire, Erin's Fortune, Nelson's Victory. Single Lee, Mishap, Dame Fortune, Carver Doone, Dan McGrew, and a gelding by, Great Bingen. Both Erin's Fortune' and Nelson's Victory took mile records of 2min lOsec,. and Carver Doone has been very successful in Canterbury. • Misfortune was bred by Mr G. McKe'nzie, of Invercargill. WINGATUI NOTES [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, September 20. The long spell of fine weather and drying winds has made the tracks at Wingatui fast, and the plough, on which 'most of the work was done this morning, was faster than usual. Pink Robe was sent a mile on the plough, and picked up by .Adina at the end of two furlongs, the full distance took lmin 46sec. Pilotls Love, who is now a member of H. A. Anderton's stable, ran half a mile comfortably in 55sec. Araboa and Janet Gayndr jumped away at the six furlong post, and after covering the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec, Araboa was going slightly the better at the finish in lmin 18 3-ssec. Our Pal beat Atua Rere (Te Monanui—Lady Pat) by a narrow margin over three furlongs in 37 '3-ssec. The latter is a-half-brother to Palermo, and has recently joined F. Shaw's team. •Night Scout (Shand) schooled well over two hurdles along the. back. He is a bold jumper and a member of A. E. Didham's. team. Hanlon, Alma, and Delrain were sent a mile, and after taking nearly 14sec for the first. furlong completed (he task in lmin 47se'c. Hanlon. who had a pull in the weights carried; finished about three lengths in front of Alma. The latter will be a definite starter in the Geraldine Cup on Saturday. Two McLean Stakes . candidates. Money Morn and ' Janefield, sprinted over three furlongs next the rails on the course proper in 37sec. 'Night Wings and Mpnipere were sent a mile at a ■ steady pace, sprinting home the last three furlongs in 40sec, with the latter showing to advantage. Moneyless took, lmin 20 l-ssec to run six furlongs. •- He looks in the rough yet, but is coming to hand and should be' ready next month.

, Valantua was sent a mile, taking lmin 24 3-ssec for the last six, and 26sec for the last two furlongs, going easily throughout. Lord Nuffield played with Slayer and Quick Return over the last furlong and a half of- six, run in lmin 20sec, the last If-mile in 52 3-ssec. Dissemble was sprinted three furlongs in 42sec. At the present time this mare is carrying a lot of condition. '

Eire's Ruin (Irish Lancer—Glentruin's Daughter) and Falmor (Paladin—Night Effort) were sprjnted over half, a mile in 54sec.

The New Zealand Cup candidate, High Glee, is gradually- developing racing shape, and moved attractively over half a mile in 50 2-ssec. His stable-mate, Norseman, still looks on the light side, and was let oft with an easy task. • .
