The nominees .from Canterbury University College for ™* odes Scholarships this year are Messrs N. H. Buchanan and G.. C. Weston, The decision to send these two names forward to the final selection committee was made yesterday by the Professorial Board of the college The final selection of two scholarships from the eight nominations will not be made until November, when the selection committee will meet in Wellington. The candidates are nominated by the three University Colleges and the Otago University. Mr Buchanan, who is a resident of Christchurch, is taking his. final section of an LL.B. degree, has begun on a B.A. degree course, and hopes to take up library work. Mr Weston, who is from New Plymouth, has completed his LLJ3. course and now aims at an LL M. degree, lie will adopt the legal profession for his career.
MR NEAL H. BUCHANAN Mr Buchanan is 22 years of age, and is a son of Mr G. H. Buchanan. He was educated in Christchurch at Christ's College, Medbury Preparatory School* and has been at Canterbury University College since 1935. At Medbury School his sporting achievements included the captaincy of the cricket eleven, a place in the first mteen, and a prize for the best all-round boy at sport. He took a Somes Scholarship (under 14) to Christ s College in 1928. At Chrises College twice represented Canterbury in boys_cricket, took two more Somes Scholarships, and passed the matriculation examination in 1931. In 1933 he was on the Credit List in the University Entrance Scholarship Examination, and in I»4| he was head of the school. Special prizes that he took- were Tancred Prizes in .Literature and History the Orford Prize for Latin, and the o&i----four Prize for Divinity. He was editor of the school magazine, secretary of the Literary Society, and a non-com-missioned officer in the school cadets. He represented his house at cricket, football, and fives. He took a junior university scholarship in 1934. In 1935 Mr Buchanan went to <-anterbury College and passed the first section of the LL.B. degree. The next year, while working for the second section, he became literary editor ol "Canta" (the Canterbury College magazine), and was elected secretary of the Old Collegians Cricket Club. Last year he passed the third section of his law degree and the. second section, for a B.A. He represented the college at cricket at.bpth inter-college matches, reached the. Canterbury College first grade in hockey in his first season,. and was on the committee of the college . cricket ' and badminton clubs. He was still literary editor of "Canta," and became foundation secretary of the New Zealand University Press Bureau. .' ' . This year he is taking the final section of the law course, and a further section for the B.A. degree. He represented Canterbury College in one cricket match and played throughout the season for the Old Collegians first grade team, and was P 1^ 111 * grade hockey throughout the j season. He was also captain of the badminton club, and was on the cricket club committee. Mr Buchanan has been on the Students' Union Council this year as well as being general editor oi "Canta." _ . , If he is awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, Mr Buchanan hopes to take a Greats degree at Oxford, which would suit him for the specialised training in Librarianship which would have to follow. He has been interested in library work for the last two years and intends to make it his career. MR CROWLEY WESTON Mr Weston, who is a son of f Mr Walter Weston (managing director ot the "Taranaki Herald"), is nearly 22 years* old. He was educated at the New Plymouth High School, and has been at Canterbury University College since 1935. Entering the High School in 1924, he won the under 10 athletic championship, and two years later the..under 12. He took part m cricket, football, and boxing, and was in the preparatory school first XV for two years. In 1931, when he passed his matriculation, examination, he was a lance-corporal in the Cadet Battalion He took also a bronze medallion and teacher's certificate for life-saving. In 1933 Mr Weston was in the first XV and second XI, as well as being on the football, cricket, swim-* ming and sports committees. He was editor of the school magazine for this and the next year. Passing to Canterbury University College in 1935 he passed the second section of the law degree (having taken the first at New Plymouth). He was a member df the Dialectic, Drama, and Law Student Societies, played cricket for Old '\ Collegians (having spent one term jat Christ's College) and football for '.the University College. He gained aV College House Blue for running, f ootbV»ll and cricket. At the end of the year "die joined the territorial forces. \ While still taking sections of the LL.B. degree in 193J5, Mr Weston represented the college at cricket, and was in the first XVA He held executive office* in the Football Club, Dialectic Society, and \College House, where once again he\ was awarded blues for running, football and eric-] ket. Injuries prevented him playing football in 1937, but he represented the college at golf, held the same executive offices as in 1936, and was a sergeant in the territorials. He com-'' pleted the LL.B. course. This year he has held! the same offices as well as being a Inember of the Canterbury University! College Executive, the Law Student Committee, was Canterbury University! College delegate to, the New Zealand University Students' Association Conference at Auckland, and reduced his golf handicap to 11. He was as a barrister of the Supreme Court, and is with a Christchurch \legal firm. He is sitting for the degre* of LL.M. this year. "■ ', ' While at the University Mr Weston received the Butterworth Prize for Excellence (in law subjects), and was equal with Mr J. N. Buchanan Matson in gaining the law Society's Gold Medal for Highest Aggregate of marks over the law coifse. If successful in the section of the Rhodes Scholarships, M Weston will take courses at Oxford IB.A. (Law) with Bachelor of CiviUyaw in the last year or a Doctorate 'Philosophy. He will enter the legalMbfession.
