CONTRACT PRICE OF £7582

ASSEMBLY HALL AT BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL

EARLY START TO BE MADE

WITH BUILDING

The contract for the erection of an assembly hall, costing £7582, at the •Christchurch Boys' High School, has been signed, the successful contractors being R. C. Jamieson. Ltd. Original plans for the hall have been modified so that an early start cart be made with the building.

"For the hall as originally planned, the lowest tender was £8300," states the Parent-Teacher Association of the school in the "P-T-A Gazette." "As this was about £IOOO more than could be raised by straining all resources, drastic alterations had to be made in the plans so that an immediate beginning might be made with the money available.

"Features cut out from the first plans are the stage flooring, inside plas-ter-work, armoury and sports goods rooms in the basement, and shower rooms. But what is left will be substantial and useful, particularly the cafeteria in the lower storey and the assembly hall itself, which will be on a level with the present upper floor of the school. '

"About £7352 is in hand for the pur-pose-of the hall. This is made up as follows:—£lß2s raised by the fete a few years ago and by the combined efforts of the Old Boys' Association, the school and the Parent-Teacher Association last year; £3OOO Government grant; £IOOO given by Mr J. R. McKenzie, to whom thanks are again offered; £SOO from the school funds; and £IOOO by two anonymous guarantors. This amount will provide merely the shell of the building; the completion of the scheme must come from further effort. ,

"A combined committee, consisting of representatives of the Canterbury University College Council, the Old Boys' Association, the school staff and the Parent-Teacher Association, has been working for this project for two years, and it is with some satisfaction mingled with regret that the complete hall cannot be provided, that they see the end of protracted negotiations."
