WORK AT RANGIORA

GOOD PROGRESS BEING

MADE

The removal of trees from the roadside of Church street, Rangiora, has not only improved the street's appearance but has made it more easily negotiable for traffic. The road surface has yet to be shingled, and with that work completed the street, which is one of the main thoroughfares to Dudley Park, should compare favourably with any in the town. . Good progress is being made in the widening of Good street. Advantage of the fine weather has been taken by the council during the last few days to renovate footpaths and repair portions of kerbirrg. Traffic lines have been painted on High street and various works, such as the clearing of reserves, are proceeding.

HIGH HONOUR CONFERRED ON MEMBER

One of the highest honours that can be conferred on a member of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association was awarded Mr J. W. Macleod, president of the Rangiora branch, when, at a meeting of the branch on Saturday evening, he was presented with headquarters' certificate of merit, in recognition of his work for the association. " ■ ■ ' The presentation was made by tne Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler), and among those who paid tributes to Mr Macleod's work for returned soldiers were Messrs A. W. Mewton (president) and E. F» Willcox (secretary) of the Christchurch Association. More than 40 were .present at the meeting, which decided to confer upon Mr Macleod the additional honour of creating him an active life member. . Reviewing Mr Macleod's record of service, Mr S. V. Whitta, vice-presi-dent of the branch, said that Mr Macleod was a member of the first executive formed in Christchurch during the war. In 1919 he joined the Rangiora branch of the New .Zealand Returned Soldiers* Association, of which he was a committee member until 1926, when he was elected president. With the exception of one year, he had been president -«ver since. Mr Macleod 'was one of the -Dominion vice-presidents for -.Canterbury and Westland, and had done outstanding work on the lands committee. , Mr Macleod is the first to be elected an active life member of the Rangiora branch, of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association. . Discussing plans for the erection of the proposed new hall for returned soldiers occupied most of the meeting's remaining time. The following committee was elected to consider the matter further and to report at ? the next meeting Of the"branch: Messrs J. W. Macleod, S. V. Whitta, Jl Marshall, G.- McAlpine, E. James, E. Withers, and E. Doggett. > After the meeting a musical programme was presented, songs being sung by Messrs Whitta and H. Coey. The accompanist was Mr S. M. Smith. Several hakas were also contributed by Messrs T. Fascoe, E. Snellex, and T. Kelly.

WHITEBAIT STILL ' SCARCE

SMALL CATCHES IN NORTH CANTERBURY RIVERS

Whitebait is still reported to be scarce in North Canterbury rivers. Catches of about 101b are the average so far this season, although one fisherman took 271b at Saltwater creek a few days ago. After more than half an inch of rain on Saturday night the rivers are swollen and discoloured, and it is not thought likely that there will be any consistently good runs of whitebait until the weather settles and there is more sunshine.

CARDS IN RANGIORA

DISTRICT

Results of last week's matches in the Friendly Societies' card tournament played by various lodges in the Rangiora district for the McPhail Cup, are as follows:—Rangiora Druids 361 beat Rangiora Oddfellows 346; Woodend Oddfellows A 370 beat Woodend Oddfellows B 369; Ohoka Oddfellows beat Rangiora Foresters.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S DAY AT RANGIORA

Young People's Day was observed at the Rangiora Methodist Church last Sunday, when special services were held. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. H. Ryan. In the afternoon there was a combined meeting of the Bible classes. Members of the Bible classes took part in the evening service, and addresses were givn by Miss G. Ryan and Mr Ryan. Solos were sung by Misses I. Benjes and M. Ryan.

CONCERT AT RANGIORA

Pupils of the Rjangiora High School will present a concert in the Town Hall to-morrow night. Included in the programme will be a good selection of pianoforte solos, part-songs, and ballets. There will also be two one-act plays. To judge from the rehearsals an excellent concert should be presented.

EUCHRE AT PREBBLETON

A"; progressive euchre match was arranged at Prebbleton to v assist the school funds. Prizes were won by Miss Kathleen Tod, Mrs L. Gallagher, Mr Brown and Mr A. Tomson.

CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS MADE

The annual bazaar and spring flower show . organised by the Presbyterian Ladies' Guild, Cheviot, was held recently, and was again a financial success, about £IOO being raised. There was a good display in both the cut bloom and decorative sections.

The champion short cup bloom was exhibited by Mrs J. Daly, the medium cup by Mrs C. W. Dalgety, and the champion trumpet by Mrs P. Harrison; tea rooms, Mesdames McClintock, F. Upston, sen., G. Dickson, F. Upston, jun., R. Lushman, Misses McCann and Hayes. A concert was given by a party from Christchurch in the evening. Items were given by Mr C. O'Hagan (songs). Misses Down, Childs, and Sealey (vocal items), Mr Beresford (humorous items). Miss fa. Graham (humorous recitations). Miss I. Skilling (fancy dances), and Miss Sealey (recitations).

Judgment Summons

J. I. Smail, Ltd. (A. C. Fraser), proceeded against C. E. McGlashan on a judgment summons in a claim for £l6. Defendant consented to an order to pay {he amount due forthwith, in default 14 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays 10s a week.

Traffic Offences

Henry Dynes Woods, for failing to keep to the left, was fined 30s and ordered to pay costs. W. E. H. Hughes, for having no warrant of fitness for his motor-cycle, was fined- 10s and ordered to pay costs. Arthur Raymond Amtman, for having no tail light on a motor-cycle, was fined 10s and ordered to pay cost's. For having no rear number plate he was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, and for refusing to stop when called on by a constable was fined £2 10s and ordered to pay costs.

Case Dismissed

Alister Angus Cameron (Mr Bowie) was charged with issuing a valueless cheque for £6 0s 6d: The Magistrate, after hearing the evidence, dismissed the <Ase.

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

The annual meeting of the Dunsandel Cricket Club was held recently. The president (Mr N. J. Brown) presided. The report said that one team was entered in the Ellesmere Association's competition, and met,with more success than for several years. The team had played nine matches, winning five and losing four. No friendly matches were played after the harvest. L. H. Johnson and M. Brown gained representative honours. The balance-sheet showed a small credit.

MUSIC EXAMINATIONS AT KAIKOURA

At the music examinations held in Kaikoura by Dr. James Lyon, examiner for, the Trinity College of Music, London, the following pupils of Miss E. PRAYERS FOR PEACE AT KAIKOURA

The Rev. S. Corney, of St. Peter's Church, Kaikoura, at the evening service on Sunday, offered prayers and intercession for European nations, and that they would be able to come to an amicable decision whereby war could be averted. The Rev: W. J. Bevis, at the Kaikoura Presbyterian Church, asked the congregation to pray for the nations, to be guided aright, and there would be no war, but a lasting peace.

TRUCKING YARDS AT LITTLE RIVER

The new entrance to the Little River trucking yards will soon be completed. This will give access to the yards from the road past the Catholic Church and stock will nfet have to be driven through the township. A large amount of soil has been deposited to form a good crossing over swampy ground. The yards are also being altered, and will be completed shortly.

EUCHRE PARTY HELD AT LITTLE RIVER

A euchre party was held in the Town Hall, Little River, in aid of hall funds. Prize-winners were: Women, Mrs Fahey 1, Mrs A. Radford 2; men, Mr M. Wilson 1, Mr Pocock 2. Mr S. le Compte was in charge of the cards.

LAWN TENNIS

ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB AT LINCOLN

The annual meeting of the Lincoln Tennis Club was held recently. Mr Cyril Boys presided. The balancesheet showed a satisfactory credit of £23 7s Id. The report said that the last season was most successful and enjoyable. A B grade team was entered in the Ellesmere Tennis Association's competitions and was runnerup. Friendly matches were played with the Ladbrooks, Templeton, Motukarara, and St. Stephen's (Ashburton) clubs. A men's singles challenge cup was presented by Mrs Thomas Hewton. Mrs Dudson and Mr Birch had also given cups. Winners of trophies were:—Men's A. E. Davis; women's singles, Miss Joan Hewton; mixed doubles, Mrs W. H. Jordan and S. C. Birch.

OKUTJ CLUB OPENS

The Okuti Tennis Club, Little River, opened its season on Saturday in ideal weather. Mr W. H. Montgomery declared the season open and presented the cups won during last season. .The -winners were:—Women's championship. Miss D. Allen; men's championship, A. Banks.

FAREWELL FUNCTION AT AKAROA

Mr R. W. Dunwoodie, of. the staff of the Akaroa Post Office, who has been transferred to Napier, was the guest at. a farewell function given by his Akaroa friends on the eve of his departure. > For the Akaroa Domain Tennis Club, Mr A. T. Smith presented Mr Dunwoodie with a pen and inkstand made from Peninsula native wood.

The evening was spent in dancing and games, music being played by Mrs J. Prendergast, Miss Ena Woodill, and Mr K. Swainson.

Mr J. Prendergast, postmaster at Akaroa, for the staff, presented Mr Dunwoodie with a gift and extended good wishes to him in his new. position.

GOLF

CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS .AT AMBERLEY

The final of the Amberley Golf Club's senior championship was played over 36 holes On Sunday.' In the morning there was a cold south-west wind and during the afternoon the weather improved "considerably. At the end of 18 holes the match was all square. At the thirty-second hole Holland was 1 up. Parsons won the next hole, again squaring the match. The thirty-fifth hole was won by Parsons and the last hole was (won by Holland. Thus the match was all .square at the thirtysixth hole. The next~-two holes were halved, but at the-next Parsons cut his tee shot out oi bounds. Riving Holland an opportunity which he accepted to: win the championship at the thirty-ninth hole. The women's senior championship was also evenly contested. AMBERLEY LADIES' CLUB

The sixth and final round ; of ■ the -rose bowl competition was played on Saturday by the Amberley Ladies' Golf Club. The best spores were returned, by Miss. N. Grierson 97, 30—67: Mrs C. A. Wornall 102, 31—71: Mrs W. Martyn 95, 24—71; Miss R. Symonds 110, 36—74.
