OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 19. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: —

North-easterlies during the day along: the -coast, otherwise northwesterlies. Moderate mainly, but fresh to strong at times inland. Some rain in the western ranges, but weather otherwise fair to fine, possibly a change to south-west-erly wind this evening with showers. Temperatures moderate. Seas f moderate.

WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:—

Moderate but freshening northwesterly winds. Weather cloudy to overcast and rain probable. Temperatures milder. Seas moderate but rising.

DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:—

Weather fair to fine in eastern districts. Changeable in and west of the ranges, with occasional showers. At many places becoming more widespread to-morrow and extending to parts of the eastern districts of the South Island. Cold to-night with many frosts, but milder to-morrow. Pressure is high across the north Tasman Sea, but a rather shallow depression is advancing across the South Tasman.

Winds—West to north-west prevailing, moderate to strong generally, and rising in places to gale force. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rather rough to rough north of Farewell Spit and about Cook and Fouveaux Straits. Elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea —Moderate to strong west to north-west winds changing later to south-west. Seas rather rough to rough.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

After a frost of 12 degrees in the morning, yesterday was fine and sunny in Christchurch. There was a cold breeze from the north-east and the maximum temperature during the day was 52.8 degrees.

At 1 o'clock this morning the sky was clear and there was no wind. The temperature was 46 degrees, and the barometer was ■steady at 29.85 inches.
