OFFICIAL FORECASTS
[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 18. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, Issued at 5 p.m, by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time o issue, is as follows: Moderate to strong south-west-erly winds. Weather mainly fair to fine, but somewhat changeable, with occasional showers probable. Temperatures cool. Seas rather rough, with a considerable southerly swell. WEST COAST The following is the forecast for the West Coast of the South Island:— Strong but decreasing southwesterly winds. Weather mainly fine and cool, but occasional passing showers probable. Sea rough, but moderating. DOMINION ' The following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather rather squally and changeable, with occasional ■ showers in most districts, but improving during to-morrow. Temperatures cool. A very deep depression crossed the Dominion last night, and pressure Is now rising rapidly with the advance of anti-cyclone across the Tasman ■ sea.. Winds—Fresh to strong southwesterlies prevailing, reaching gale force in exposed positions, but decreasing to-morrow. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Very rough between East Cape and Banks Peninsula and north of Farewell Spit; elsewhere rather rough to rough, but seas moderating gradually. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong south-westerly winds to gales, and very rough seas, but wind and seas gradually decreasing. CHRISTCHURCH " WEATHER The weather in Christchurch during the week-end was changeable. Conditions were fine and sunny Saturday afternoon, but a south-west, storm arose in the early part of the evening, and heavy rain, accompanied by a strong wind, fell during the evening. The sky cleared again yesterday, when there was a bright sun and a cold wind. The evening, was cold arid the sky was clear. At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was clear, and there .was no wind. The temperature was 41 degrees, ' and the barometer, was steady at 29.75 inches. . Auckland —Boisterous weather ruled at the week-end. The weather was fine, with a fresh wind on .Saturday until the evening, when there was a thunderstorm with hail. At night the weather was unsettled, with heavy rain squalls and a westerly wind, at times of gale force. On Sunday the unsettled weather continued, with a fresh to strong south-south-west wind. The maximum temperature was 67 degrees. The barometer fell steadily until early on Sunday morning, when it recovered, the reading at 5 p.m. being 29.25 inches. Wellington—Early, on Saturday morning the weather, was overcast, with occasional rain, but from the middle of the morning onwards there was broken cloud with intermittent sunshine. A strong north-west wind blew. Heavy rain fell during Saturday night. The wind turned to the south about 5. a.m., and 1 although ■ it was gradually •‘moderating it was still strong oh Sunday afternoon. There were some showers on Sunday; mornj ing, but the afternoon was,-.fine and sunny. The.-maximum temperature on Saturday was 58.4 degrees. On Sat” urday night the.minimum temperature was 40.5 degrees. The, maximum on Sunday was 49.0 degrees, and at d p.m. on Sunday the temperature was 47.8 degrees, and the barometer recorded 29.47 inches. '' . Dunedin—’The weathea was fine and sunny on both Saturday, morning and Sunday morning, but on each day conditions in t he , a J terno ° l ?- S? Saturday the sky clouded over in the late afternoon, «nd a light shower fell towards evening. The maximum temperature was 81 degree. The barometer fell throughout Saturday, and continued -o fall till early on Sunday morning, when it began to_ rise again, having been ’as low as 29.30 inches. Yesterday’s maximum temperature was 56 degrees, a cold south-west wind tempering the heat in the morning. There was a hail shower in the afternoon.'
