Gisborne was the only centre to win more thaw one title at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships, which concluded on Saturday night. D. Heeney, welter-weight, retained his title, and W. Lister took the title from his brother, T - lister. -The winner was a ponderous fighter with plenty of power, -but little science, whose success was attributable in some degree to the hard- fight which his brother had bad with Marsh. CFBZSa . ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) BLENHEIM,’ September 18. Clazxie Bayner (Blenheim), 9st 61b, comfortably out-pointed Brian McKay (Hastings). 9st 51b. In a 12-round professional boxing match last -night, before a large audience. Bayner had a winning margin in nine rounds. His punching was too severe for McKay who. however, boxed well alter being Knocked down in the first round. Bayner forced the fight, all the way. With heavy, rips to the body, he slowed up McKay over the last four or five rounds. The bout was spectacular and willing throughout, but the winner was too experienced for hls opponent. •
* ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The annual boxing championships of Bt. Andrew’s College were-held in the college gymnasium bn Saturday night. The heavy-weight title and boxing championship of the college was won by R. Smith. The officials were:—Referee. Mr J. I>. Hutchison; judges. Dr. A. M. Hartnell and Mr L. Lilly: timekeeper, Mr C. S. Thomas; medical officer, D T r - J?- K ’ toickson; announcer, Mr F. J. Bennett. The following were the results;— Under 6st—Semi-finals: P. Greenwood Csst 81b) beat H. N. Brownlie (sst 101b), J. M. Anderson (sst 81b) boxed a nodecision bout with I. L. Gray. Final. Greenwood beat Anderson. Anderson appeared'to be the better boxer, but he made the mistake of allowing his opponent to make the fight and lost by a narX °Under rS ‘6sV 101b—Semi-finals: E. O. Carr (6st 81b) beat D. R. Smith (6st 61b) I. L. Gray (sst 131b) a bye. Final: Gray beat Carr. Gray, who showed considerable promise, held the upper hand, throughout, but Carr fought back gamely. Under 7st lOlb-Semi-finals: V. Coxon <7st 101b) beat D. J. Webb (7st 101b). D. C. Thomson (7st 51b) beat A. B. Fordyce t*7st 81b). Final: Coxon beat Thomson. A Very willing bout. Coxon punched powerftdly with both hands, and had superior reach and strength. Thomson, however, boxed cleverly and doggedly and was the Sresher at the finish. ■ • ~ Under Bst 101b— Semi-finals: J. F. McKenzie (Bst 101b) beat H. R. Harding (Bst 51b). P. j. Lawrence (Bst 91b) boxed a So-declsion bout with J. G. Broughton. «?inal; McKenzie beat Lawrence. McKenzie. who displayed morp boxing skill, won sae first round, but Lawrence was attack-
ing hotly at the finish. McKenzie won narr°Under 9st 101b— Semi-finals: R. R^McPherson (ost 71b) heat>R. M, Jarman. (9|t 61b), H. A. Smith (9st 31b) beat_C. A. Henderson (9st 91b). Final: McPherson beat Smith. Another willing and _ closely contested bout. McPherson worried Smith with a powerful .straight left, hut Smith fought back . strongly. _ _ Under lost 101b— Seitii-finals: J. H. Wood (10st 31b) beat N. Ackroyd (10st;21b). M. H. J. Petrie (9st 81b) beat S. G. Fraser (lost 101b). Final: Wood beat Petrie. After a cautious start, Wood darted ,in _ with a two-handed attack and won convincingly. Open Heavy-weight—Final: R.. Smith (12st 61b) beat D. D. Foote (list 9lb) There was heavy in-fighting-in the .first round in which Smith, landing powerfully with both hand?;, sent Foote down for five. The second and third rounds were more even, but with a slight advantage to Smith, who was always dangerous at close quarters..
