LAWN TENNIS

LOSS OF £320 FOR YEAR

REVIEW OP CANTERBURY ACTIVITIES

A loss for the year of £320 5s sd, compared with £436 14s 2d in the previous year, is shown in the annual report of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. The Wilding Park account is the chief contributor to the deficit—£l9l 12s fid, compared with £291 Os 4d in 1936-37. The, report records that the management committee is greatly concerned at the annual drain on the association’s funds and that every endeavour is being made to place its finance in a more stable condition. Apart from its financial difficulties, the association had a successful year, undertaking a very wide, range of activities. The many inter-club competitions and tournaments were well supported, and many friendly matches .were arranged for sub-associations and country clubs. After resisting challenges from Wellington for both the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunneley Casket, Canterbury lost the former trophy to Auckland.

The opinion is expressed in the report that the holding of the New Zealand junior championships at Wilding Park had a beneficial effect on the standard of play of the Canterbury juniors.

The formation of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Umpires’ Association is mentioned as a forward step in the game in the province. The association last season adopted the policy of providing balls for inter-club matches, and as a result there was an addition of £SO to the net revenue. Appreciation of the services of Mr W. R. Main,' recently retired from the position of groundsman at Wilding Park, is recorded. The . weather again made things difficult for the ground , staff during tfie year. The condition of the stands is a constant source of worry- to the ground committee, and more than £7O had to be spent on timber for repairs. The report, referring to prospects for the coming ssaspn, states that advice has been received from four unaffiliated clubs, with a total membership of about £SO, that they, intend to reafliliate this ,%;ar.
