CPRSSS 4SSOCUTIOV TeEEOaSX.) WELLINGTON. September 18. The following handicaps have been declared for the Marton Jockey Club's meeting on September 24:

trainer, F,. Christmas, who ; £uftwed ; <-a severe Wow when he lost Jolly Beggar last week; led in two winners, The Sandwichmen and Gay, Parade, . G Humphries rode Miss Bluff ondNignt Dress to . victory, and A. Parsons had wins on Gay Parade and wine Card Well Bandied ’ >

„ M. Reilly, rider 61 The Sandwichman, had only ridden twice previously over hurdles. He has done a good deal of schooling Work, and he handled Saturday’s winner exceptionally well. Reilly is attached te J. B. Pearson’s stable.. »<; " ’•

A Typical Nightmare!* day Parade’s win on Saturday was the most pronounced seen on the course for■' a, long time. ;He had given indications of soon opening his winning account by his recent work, but to beat a field as polntlessly as he did .was not fully expected. He was bred by ms owner*'Mr F. T. Buchanan, of Roueston. who raced the dam. Gay Sonnet with much success in all parts of the South Island. Gay Parade has not been asked to do much racing to date, and the patient policy adopted with him by hie present trainer sho'uld. allow him .to; reach much better' class than 1 that represented by Saturday’s field.

A Massive Juvenile Gold Salute, who filled second place in the John Grigg . Stakes at Axilburton on Saturday,, is one of the biggest two-year-olds seen out for some time. He Is by Lord Warden from the Paper Money mare, Frenzied Finance, and like many of the .Lord Warden breed will do better with age. Frenzied Finance has had a .varied stud career. Her first production was Miladi, a good > winner, and her next four foals died. She then threw War* den’s Gift, who has not raced to much extent, and Gold Salute was her next. Last year she bad a dead foal to Nightmarch and this season she has been .mated with Spear Dance. Not Himself

Nigger Boy, who was expected to be a source of trouble to Master Hotspur on Saturday, was suffering from a cold, and he appeared very dull when paraded in the birdcage. He was the first to show but from the barrier, but was done with a good wav from home. He is a plain looking colt by Nigger Minstrel. but is no doubt the makings of a speedy galloper. Sign of Stamina JBrandon, who filled third place in the classic, did not Compare very favourably in- toe matter of size when paraded with his more upstanding rivals, but the manner in which he came from last place to beat Nigger Boy for third third prize suggested - that -stamina makes ub for what he lacks in build and looks, He stood* still -When the barrier lifted, and as he was well in the rear with two furlongs covered, he was practically forgotten, but he arrived late on the scene with a telling run, and was going on at the post. Brandon is a gelding by Royden from Bran -Pie, by Buckwheat. Bran Pie is also the dam ■of . Aggravate, who- ran a fair race on Saturday. ; Rider Suspended . . The falls of Toro Koura and Rebel Leader in the second division of the Novice Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday were the subjects of an inquiry, called for by the stipendiary \ steward Mr C. F. Hartland, after the race, and after hearing some evidence, the inquiry was adjourned until; after the fourth race, when it was announced that H. Hibberd, rider of Phenomenal, had been suspended from riding for a month. Phenomenal drew to the froni near the half-mile post, and in another fety strides. Toro; Koura foil.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Owners with horses. engaged at. the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday next, axe reminded that acceptances will close today. . • • Acceptances for two trotting events on the first day of the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting will closev to-day. At Ashburton Pecunia, winner of the Selma Trot Handicap, at Ashburton on Saturday, is - ah aged gelding by Worthy Bond from a. Goldwood mare. He has done little racing, and this marked his first; success. He is trained at Pleasant Point by D. Teahen, and this gave the South Canterbury trainer his second success In a week, the other having been gained with Guncase at New Brighton. An unusual feature of the betting was the strong support accorded Pecunia on the win machine, on which he was second favqjurite, while on the Place machine he was only eleventh fancy. Wellington T.C. A good deal of interest is being taken in the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday next, and the great majority of the horses engaged are .• trained in Canterbury. Although 12 nominations were received for the Bollard Memorial Handicap, six of these come from three stables, M. B. Edwards has Twenty Grand and Philario, C. S. Donald Repeal and Marlene, and M. C. McTigue Fine Art and Dark Hazard, and all these horses havfi been entered lor the Wellington Handicap, the final event of the day. The programme has been framed With the idea of giving each horse two chances during the day, and it is a policy that is appreciated by trainers who are compelled to undertake the rather expensive trip to Wellington. Special Edition. Special Edition was not nominated for the Wellington Stakes, a race for three-year-olds, to be run at Wellington on Saturday; but he has been entered for the two maiden events. ■A.Hntt Park Prospect At the New, Brighton meeting on September 10, Sagamore, conceding 84 yards' start, finished fourth in the Improvers’ Handicap, behind Timworthy. Dollar Maid, and Klhnorick, and in vlaw of hit engagements at Wellington this week the form is instructive. In the Nal Nai Handicap, 3min 40sec class. Saggmore is set to giva away 48 yards, and 72 yards In the Wllford Handicap, of two miles. Sagamore has proved a more than useful trotter, and has improved since being taken over

by A. Butterfield. Sagamore should earn expenses on the Wellington trip. Promising

At one stage Taruna looked like developing into a olae* racehorse, but while be has not bad the success anticipated, M. Holmes has nominated him fop events at Wellington, and evi-r dently has hopes of bis developing. Taruna is by Frank Worthy, and only four years old, he has his racing days in front of him. Back in Work

Tyrone Lass is back in work under V, Alborn, but as no serious tasks have been allotted her, it is too .early to say whether she will stand up to a real preparation. At her best, Tyrone Lass is a speedy trotter, but recurring unsoundnese has interfered with her racing career, Alborn will leave for Wellington on Thursday with Colonel Axworthy, A Useful Pacer

J. Bell, jun., has in Dancing Pirate a four-year-old that gives promise, of developing Into a good stake-winner. He is by a champion racehorse in Man o’ War from Doll Dance, who was by Oinako from a Brent Locanda mare. Dancing Pirate was bred by Bell, who also raced his dam- some years ago. At the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting, which will commence on Thursday, Dancing Pirate is engaged in the Geraldine Trotting Handicap, of a mile and three furlongs, and his latest running suggests that he will be prominent at the finish.
