RACING AND TROTTING

SPRING RACING

BEGINS

ASHBURTON COUNTY

MEETING

MASTER HOTSPUR WINS

JOHN GRIGG STAKES

SUCCESSES FOR WINE CARD

AND NIGHT DRESS

Spring racing in the South Island was inaugurated on Saturday by the Ashburton County Racing Club’s fixture. The weather was fine: but there was a boisterous, cool wind. The attendance was very satisfactory and the racing was interesting. The track was in fast order, and its hard condi- ' lion no doubt caused the many upsets in form during the afternoon. Speculation was brisk and the turnover would have shown a big increase but tor the defeats of favourites and for a restricted speculation on the Novice Stakes. Two division races are not very popular with investors, or for that matter with the. clubs. The sum of £15,232 was handled, compared with £15,282 10s at last year’s spring meeting. a decrease of £SO 10s. The principal event, the Ashburton Handicap, attracted a strong field, and a close finish was seen, in which the little-fancied Made Money proved the best stayer. Much interest was shown in the John Grigg Stakes, for which seven two-year-olds paraded. The Riccarton colt, Master Hotspur, bore out all that had been said about him by taking the lead early and outclassing his opponents. It could be said that he was not; asked to*do his best at any part of the contest, but nevertheless covered half a mile in 47 3-ssec. He did not appear to be moving at such a pace, but a strong following wind for most of the journey no doubt assisted him. This colt is the first of Ringmaster’s progeny to race, and there is no doubt about his brilliance. Since he was broken In he has acted like an old stager, and this asset, a valuable one in a young racehorae’s conformation, was clearly indicated by the manner in which the colt behaved in the birdcage before and alter the race, and also* at the barrier waiting lor the field to be dispatched. 15- Hay certainly showed good judgment in going to such a high figure as 850 guineas for a yearling by an untried sire, and Master Hotspur should soon return his outlay. - His appearance at Trentham next month will no doubt create widespread interest. ' Wine Card was not in much demand In the Spring Handicap, which she won alter a stubborn struggle. She was probably fortunate in that the favourite. Kinnoull. received a check at a serious stage of the race, but that suggestion does not detract from her performance. as her finishing effort was marked by real gameness. . The mUe hack event was won by the Stonyhurst-bred Night Dress, who. now a four-year-old, had not got on the winning list since he had one success as a two-year-old. He is one of Nightmarch’s productions, and closely resembles' his sire, and although he has been a long time returning any of the money involved in his purchase by his present owners, he may now carry on as a stake-earner. • ... Nightmarch was represented by another winner In Gay Parade: who won the second division of the Novice Stakes by a wide margin. Details of the racing are as follows: COUNTY HURDLES, Of £130: second horse £2O. and third horse £lO from stake. One mile and a hair and 100 yards. S. S-iD. NOTES ON THE RACING

An Early Surprise

Mount Val, Top Rank, and Silver Sight accounted for the bulk of the speculation in the County Hurdles,.but the two first-named' failed, while Silver Sight had to submit to a decisive defeat by the outsider of the field. The Sandwichman. A fast pace was early set by The Sandwichman, Top Rank, 1 and Night Sail, and they disputed the lead until the half-mile, where The Sandwichman took. the lead and Silver Sight moved up. The Sandwichman was well clear entering the straight from Silver Sight- and Top Rank Silver Sight screw badly and ■ appeared to interfere with Top Rank. In the meantime, The Sandwichman carried .on to win without pressure from Silver' Sight, who. put in some solid work but -had . no chance - of getting up. Dividend; who was several, lengths in the rear * or

greater part of the journey, came with a strong ,run to get up for third money from Top Hank, whose rider lost his irons at the last fence. Contract, Chaste and Mount Val followed, with Night Sail, who broke down during the race, tailed off. This was The Sandwichman’s first race over hurdles, and his- display, in spite of the fast pace he established from, the outset, was an excellent one. In most of his races on the flat he has not gone far, but on this occasion he ha'd no trouble in seeing out the journey. Silver Sight finished solidly, and but for his bad jump at the last fence might have made the finish more interesting, without, however, altering the result. Dividend was careful over the first two fences arid lost a lot of ground, but improved as the race progressed, and his final effort was a feature of the;, race. Top Rank was weakening’ when he met trouble, but nevertheless he might have been in a place. Mount Val blundered badly at the third fence and was never afterwards likely. ' \ Two Division Race There were two late withdrawals, Colonel Rouge and Synthetic, from the Novice Stakes, but two divisions were still necessary. In the first, Nigella soon took charge and led into the straight from Sportsman, Black Coat, Royal Refrain,’ and Miss Bluff. Nigella was. challenged by Royal Refrain 100 yards ■ from the post, and just as she appeared to be holding him off, Miss Bluff shot up_on the outside of the pair to gain a narrow but fairly comfortable win from Nigella, who beat ■Royal Refrain on the post. Sportsman and Comtis were'close up next.' .Never in Doubt • Gay Parade made a one-horse race of the second division.; He quickly assumed command and disputed the early lead with Toro Koura and Phenomenal. Toro Koura fell at the halfmile post and Gay Parade then left Phenomenal to have a substantial lead entering the straight from Remembo, Phenomenal,' Bahama Maid, and Rebellion. Gay Parade was not asked to do his best at any part of the run home, and-still had 10 lengths to spare at the post In an interesting tussle for second money. Rebellion got up to ,beat* Remembo in the last stride, with .Phenomenal handy Bahama Maid and Amourette. Rebel Leader, who was near the rear earl y> collided with Toro Koura when Me latter was rising after his fall. and also fell. Both riders, L. J. Ellis and J. Wadley. escaped injury. Pecunia Wins Trot The contest for the Selina Trot was marred to some extent by Marfax falling shortly after the start and ing Marque to fall over him, while he caused interference to “Veral ofoers. including Resistance and Glenholrnp. Dancing Pirate, and Super Jack. disputed the lead for most of the journey, and Dancing' Pirate, Super Jack, Pecunia, and Tinker were in close order entering the straight, with Fragment'and Peter Bee handy.' A long struggle ensued • between the lour leaders, and the result was in doubt until Pecunia showed- out nearing the post to win by less than a length from Dancing Pirate, who just beat Tinker. Super Jack was two lengths away, in front'' of Fragment, Peter Bee, and Mongolian.

Ashburton Handicap

Made Money caused another, surprise in winning the Ashburton Handicap, paying good double figures. Last Refrain and Mungatoon were slow to move off, and when the field had settled down Travenna had -charge from Dunstan and Silver Slipper and with half the journey covered Travenna led from Dunstan, Made Money, and Mungatoon, with Cape Gabo in last place. Last Refrain made ' a fast forward move rounding the top and joined Travenna in front, and the' pair entered the straight abreast, in front of Dunstan, Made Money, Petersham, and Silver Slipper. Last Refrain was in front a furlong from the post, but did not carry 0n,.;; and :Made Money, Petersham, arid Dunstan ' closed on him. In a-thrilling finish Made Money gradually worked his way. to the front, and .finishing resolutely, won by half a length from Dunstan, who held on well to: beat Petersham by a peck. t.ast Refrain was a length away, clear of Silver Slipper, with Travenna, Cape Gabo, Mungatoon, and Windward following in that order. Made Money'won well,, and although lie had not, raced for some months he evidently, had; done a lot of work, as he was going away at the right end. 'MaderMohey’s; last .success was at the

New Zealand Cup meeting last* year, when he paid one of the biggest dividends of recent years. Dunstan gave a very encouraging display in his first attempt as a three-year-old, and looks a real stayer. Petersham promised well when he drew up to Last Refrain at the distance) but could not improve. Last Refrain had a good deal of ground to make up to get to the leaders, and this seemed to settle his chance. Travenna was done with more than a furlong from home, while Cape Gabp gave one of his bad displays. Mungatoon, like Last Refrain, made up lost ground quickly during the middle stages, but soon retired again to a rear position. A Brilliant Juvenile Master Hotspur was sent out at a very shert price for the John Grigg Stakes, and justified his position by recording a ridiculously easy win. Nigger Boy was the first out, but was soon joined by the favourite, who gradually forged ahead to- lead into the straight from Nigger Boy, King Gustavo, and Gold Salute, with Brandon. who was last away, iq, a rear position. Master Hotspur- did not have to be at all seriously ridden in the run home, and was easing up at the post. Gold Salute put in a telling run to get up for second money, while Brandon came with a late run to beat Nigger Boy on, "the post for third money. King Gustavo was next, in front of Cyprine and Bere Regis. Master Hotspur created a big impression, and is undoubtedly an outstanding galloper. Gold Salute also drew attention to his future prospects,, while Brandon, although on the small side, did well to be in the finish after his unfavourable position over the first two furlongs. Cyprine and Bere Regis were slow to move and were never near the leaders. An Overdue Win Lady Rosette’s staunch favouritism for the Penscroft Hack Handicap was hardly justified on her performances to date, and she failed badly. She was well placed to the home turn, where she ran wide and, continuing to bore outwards, settled the chance of Wagner, who was on the outside of her. Night Dress was the first to show out, and Happy Night and Aggravate were the slowest to move. Dracula rushed to the front at the end of a furlong and led into the straight from Night Dress. Screamer, Glenacro, and Bellerive. Night Dress challenged inside the distance and, soon having Dracula’s measure, comfortably beat him home. Screamer stayed on for third money, beating Happy Night, who finished very fast, by half a length. Robant and Glenacre were next. Night Dcess, who has made gradual improvement since being gelded, did his best. work at the right end. He has been a long time winning any money for his present owners, who secured him from the late Sir Charles Clifford for 150 guineas. Dracula ran up to his recent impressive track work and easily held second place. Screamer gave a very satisfactory 'display and may go on to better deeds. Happy Night was once again unlucky in losing any chance he had at the start. Kinnoull Unlucky Wine Card, who had not won a race since she beat a strong field in the Ashburton Cup in April last, caused another surprise by winning the Spring Handicap after an attractive performance. Ponty backed out when the barrier went up and was badly left. Second Innings, from No. 1, was the first to show out and was soon jbined by Lady Leigh and Land Raid, and this trio led round the home turn an-l into the straight from Metal Bird, Wine Card, Kinnoull, and Golden Chest. Second Innings and Land Raid did not last long, and Wine Card drew up to Lady Leigh. This pair had just settled down to a neck and neck tussle when Kinnoull put in an appearance with a powerful run. Wine Card shook off Lady Leigh, but had to be ridden right out to stall off Kinnoull, who would have secured the verdict in another stride. Cocksure wis a length away, in front of Golden Chest and Land Raid, with Rabble and Ponty next. Wine C .rd stuck solidly to her task, but Kinnoull was undoubtedly unlucky, as he lost about three lengths when the tiring Land Raid went back on to him. He pulled up quite sound, and his next appearance will be followed with interest. Lady Leigh, although on a hard track that did not suit her, shaped well in her first race In open company. Cocksure, looking bigger than usual, finished strongly.

but both Land Raid and Second , Innings stopped badly. Favourite Wins Wharrum was confidently supported to win the Rakaia Trot, and his task was a fairly easy one. He followed the pacemaker. Seaward de Oro, from the outset, and there was not much between them when the straight was reached. Wharrum then drew to the front and was never under pressure. Ace High and Diversion came from well back to fight out a close tussle for second money, the former gaining a narrow verdict. Bill B. was half a length away, in front of Panquitch' and Token.

NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service.!

PALMERSTON N., September 17, Trial Stake* ■>

'Finishing strongly on the outer. Morning Flight won the Trial Stakes narrowly but decisively. Sporting Luck. Richelieu Pearl, and Lady Melfort led to the half, others prominent being Drachma. Morning Flight, and Prediction. Snigger was in the middle of the field, badly placed, and Yours Truly was further back on the rails. Sporting LUck and Lady Melfort led into the straight, and Lady Melfort held on best of the leading bunch, but over the last bit she was overwhelmed by the finishing runs of Morning Flight and Prediction.' Drachma was fourth, followed by Dame Flora. Sporting Luck, Valiant Lady, and Yours Truly. The race was run in heavy rain, which may have affected the chances of some runners. Lady Melfort and Drachma ran very, good races for fresh horses. Yours Truly finished well, but was never within striking distance. Prediction did not get the best of passages and was a trifle unlucky. The Hurdle Race Xddo scored a runaway win- in the Paiaki Hurdles. Always near. the lead, he jumped to the front at the five-furlong post. Revival was threatening at the last fence, but fell, leaving Iddo to run home unchallenged. Entheos beat his stablemate, Princess Isobel, for second, with Curie handy, ana then came Aiguille. Nothing had any chance with the winner. Entheos .and Curie were always well back, though they made up ground at the finish. A Comfortable Win Sporting Gift had an easy win in the Moutlti Hack Handicap. He and Nelumbo made all the running, most prominent of the others being Rowana, Rustem, and Accomplice. Sporting Gift drew right out in the straight and won • comfortably, while Nelumbo weakened, to. be beaten for second by Rowana. Earl Colossus, War Lap. Rustem, Trebor. and Accomplice were next. The favourite, Rustem, had every chance. Trebor finished on from a long way back. . ' _ Happy Landing’s Cup

There was a slirrfng duel , between* Happy Landing and Quadroon In the Carnarvon Gold Cup, the former holding on for a narrow win. Lucullus Lad- made the pace, but was joined by Happy Landing. who went-up fast from five or six places back at the five-furlong post. Happy Landing took charge at the. halfmile from Lucullus Lad. with Quadroon in behind, the others being ridden. Lucullus Lad was done with entering the straight, where Quadroon went up to the leader. In spite of all efforts, - Quadroon was unable to reach Happy Landing, who stuck on solidly. This pair drew .right away from the rest, Siegmund just getting third from Barley Almond several lengths away, and then came JPuroto and Lucullus Lad. Quadroon had the race made to order for him, but Happy Landing was just too good. His turn'was due. Siegmund ran an excellent race for a fresh horse, but- none of the others was dangerous. Lucullus Lad stopped quickly when collared. A Furlong Margin

Only four ran in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, which was won in solid style by Southern Blood. Southern Blood did not jump well, but was with .Hanover in front over the last circuit, and finally outstayed him, Hanover falling at the last fence after he had lost the lead. Tills left Southern Blood to win by nearly a furlong. Favourite Prevails Royal Choice was solidly backed to win the Awahou Hack Handicap, and did his part in good style. He got out well, and then dropped in behind Mother-in-Law and Screen Star, others handy -being Sunny Blonde, Warehi, and Nereus. Mother-in-Law began to weaken on the home turn, and entering the . straight Royal Choice had gone up to Screen Star. Royal Choice had the race won a long way oil the post and only had to.be kept going. Nereus came through with a challenge for second but just failed to reach Screen Star, who paid a good price. Red Cockade was fourth, then came Warehi, Raroa, Merryhfian, Mother-in-Law, Sunny Blonde, and Rarotonga. Success for Jazz Bay

Finishing very solidly. Jazz Boy wore down the pacemaker. Joviality, at the finish of the Robinson Handicap after he had trailed him to the straight.. They finished well clear of ,the others. Silver River coming right from, the rear of . the field for third, with Alyth fourth, then Meamea, Dorado. Royal Minstrel, and The Bigot. Alyth and Raceicall, prominent early, weakened in the run home;-

A Dual Winner Sporting Gift, penalised 71b for his earlier win,- scored again in the last race without difficulty. He soon reached the front and was, never seriously threatened. Haile Selassie hung badly round the turn, but was still able to get second comfortably. * \
