STRAIGHT-OUT CONTESTS FOR MOST SEATS

Although nominations for the General Election do not close until October 3, the Labour Party has announced its complete list of candidates, and the only seat for which the National Party has not yet selected its candidate is Grey -Lynn. The selection for that electorate will be made on Tuesday evening.

Seats held. by Independents and not to be contested by the Government are Nelson (Mr H. Atmore) and Mataura (Mr D. McDougall). Appearances are that the National Party will not contest Egmont, Wellington West, and Wellington North. Two Independents, Messrs C. A. Wilkinson and R. A. Wright, now represent the first two of those constituencies, and Mrs Knox Gilmer is standing an Independent for Wellington North.

Including the four Maori seats, the party representation of the announced candidates stands:—Labour, 78; National, 76; Independents, 22 (for 18 seats); Country Party, one. ,

Sitting members are designated by an asterisk in the following list. Parties are signified by the following abbreviations:— L., Labour; N., Nationalist; 1., Independent; 1.L., Independent Labour; C.F., Country Party. In the 1935 election results, D. signifies Democrats.
