HORSES IN FORM

(By CARBINE.)

' The president of the Racing Confer-! ence, Mr J. S. McLeod, should win a race soon with Happy Landing. Happy Landing ran good races at Wanganui, and would have been' harder, to beat on a bigger course; As the Foxton course will not suit him, he might not win there to-day, but he should be yery hard to beat. Curie won so decisively at Wanganui that even with his increased weight he will be in favour among the hurdlers at Foxton. Iddo might rival him in the betting, as lie has run some good races lately and is seasoned. Old rivals,' Master Cyklon.and Lucullus Lad, will meet again in the Gold Cup at Foxton. Both won so easily at Wanganui that they" will be in favour, and may dominate the market, but Quadroon, who ran a fair race last, week over a course which was rather short for him, will not. be friendless.. '

There is a good opportunity for a light-weight to win the open sprint at Foxton, and Alyth.and Jazz Boy, who ran prominently in hack cqmpany at Wanganui, are liable to keep the more heavily-weighted division very busy.

ASHBURTON RACES

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME

The Ashburton County Racing Club's spring fixture to-day is likely to attract a large gathering of racegoers, as the programme is a most attractive one, and many horses with more important racing ahead of them will be seen in action. The track will probably be in fast order, and some close contests can be expected. Principal interest will be centred in the Ashburton Handicap, in which several New Zealand Cup candidates are engaged, and in the John Grigg Stakes, the first" race for two-year-olds in the South Island. The win-and-place system will be in operation, and the following horses can be expected to race prominently:— County Hurdles: Mount Val, Top Rank, Sunny Comet. Novice Stakes: First division, Colonel Rouge, Black Coat and Comus; second division, Gay Parade, Synthetic, and Rebellion.

Selma Trot: Fragment, Drumcree, Rosalind Maid.

Ashburton Handicap: Last Refrain, Cape Gabo. Petersham. John Grigg Stakes: Master Hotspur, Nigger Boy,' 1 Cyprine. Penscroft Hack Handicap: Wagner, Gold Boy, Happy Night. TURF GOSSIP

Reminder Nominations for the Kurow Jockey Club's annual meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Acceptances for the first day of the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday. Train far Ashburton Races

A special passenger train will leave Christchurch to-day at 9.45 a.m., arriving at the Ashburton racecourse at ■11.27 a.m. The return train will leave the racecourse at 5.15 p.m., arriving in Christchurch at 7 p.m. Nfew Colours

Mr G. H. Paul, of Washdyke, will be represented for the first time in a race by Gold Salute in the John Grigg StaVfes at Ashburton to-day. He recently purchased Gold Salute from the breeder, Mr T. E. Hide, of Seadown, and trains him himself at Washdyke.

Repurchased Top Row -will race in Australia on behalf of his trainer, P. T. Hogan, who bought him back from Mr W. J. Dore before leaving Washdyke. North Canterbury Visitor Second Innings, in the charge of E. Redmond, arrived at Riccarton from Spotswood yesterday and appears to be in very forward condition. He will be ridden to-day by L. J. Ellis. An Explanation. The conditions attached to the Ohapi Hack Handicap at the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting appear to have given rise to some confusion. Though they provide for a 7-7 minimum, that has no bearing on the Rules of Racing, which necessitate a nine-stone maximum in all handicap events. Always Liable , Last Refrain has not won a race for some time, but he is reported to be in ■good order, and" as he will have the services of L. J. Ellis to-day, he is certain to be well supported. Novice Hurdler Much interest will be evinced m Dividend's first race over hurdles at Ashburton to-day. He has been schooling in an encouraging manner, but has been inclined at times to chance his fences, and the Ashburton hurdles will offer more resistance than the leaning schooling battens at Riccarton. A Long Spell Patuma would also have been an interesting novice to-day; but unfortunately he will have to be put aside for some months, having strained his back early in the week. He gave great promise as a jumper in his schooling in the last few months, and it. is hoped that he will be able to resume activity ' next winter. * • Maiden Contestants The Washdyke trainer E. J. Ellis has ' three horses in the Novice Stakes. Off Parade is a four-year-old gelding by Surveyor from Te Kuiti, owned by Mr S. Woods, of Timaru. Toro Koura is a three-year-old gelding by Pink Coat from Goldpit, owned by the Hons. Hunter and Webb, an'd Neptune is a three-year-old gelding by Tidal from Marais, owned by Mr J. M. Samson. Other little-known candidates in the same race are Black Coat by Pink Coat from; The Geisha, Rebel Leader by Robespierre from Keelrow, Sportsman by Pink Coat from En Parole, Jo Jo by Hymestra from Makere, Dennis , Dowling by Tractor from Ravenna, Amouretto by Lord Warden from Amourette, La Plata by Lord Warden from Love of Silver, and Miss Bluff by Cockpit from Miss Camouflage. In connexion with to-day's race, if run in two divisions, a win dividend will be paid on the winner of each division, and place dividends wjll be paid on the first and second horses of each division. An Oaks Candidate Lady Rosette will no doubt attract attention from investors in the Penscroft Hack Handicap at Ashburton today. She ran two promising races at Riccarton last month, and is considered a likely Oaks candidate. She was nominated also for the Novice Stakes, but so that some indication may be given as to her staying powers, she is to start in the mile event, in which she will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. Lady Rosette is a half-.sister by Lord Warden to Vintage and Lady Graceful, and races in the colours of Mrs D. W. Westenra. Two horses in the Penscroft HKck Handicap who should race well on recent track trials are Nightdress and Screamer, but their race efforts have not been v.ery encouraging, and until they give indications of reproducing what they can do in trials, they are not likely to solicit much support from investors. ■ , A Class Galloper Although there is no justification to make Kinnoull first choice for to- . day's Spring. Handicap at Ashburton, he is deserving of serious consideration. In October of last year, he made his reappearance in the Flying Handicap, of six furlongs, at Washdyke, after an absence of many months, and showed his, class by beating Rebel Mate, Invoice, Top Row, and Araboa. He carried 9-3, and won by a neck j in the good time of lmin 12 l-ssec. Going on to Trentham, he won the Wainui Handicap, of one mile, with 9-5, from Catalogue, .9-6, in lmin 37 3-5 sec, but in his second engagement at the meeting, the Harcourt Stakes. He has not raced since, but has got through a good deal of solid work in the last few weeks, and at least seems to be in as good order as j he was 12 months ago. Kinnoull will ] be ridden to-day by A. E. Didham. j Good Prospects n Although scratched at 2 p.m. on Sat- j urday from the Avondale Cup, Royal Bachelor still remains in the Flying i Handicap, six furlongs, and it is ex- < pected that he will take his place in J the field for that race, in which he is- .j likely to start as one of the favourites. *. A northern report states that the four- : year-old is very brilliant and more ( forward in condition than when he j finished a good third to Flood Tide and r Kilonsa in-gthe Jellicoe Handicap at j Ellerslie month, i

For the Stud Before his departure for Sydney last week, Mr W. Higgins made arrangements for the Paper Money mare Passbook, the dam of Deficit and Dissipation, to be mated with Beau Pere this season. Passbook is being shipped to Sydney this week. Sight Draft, another of Mr Higgins's mares, is being sent to Defoe.

Chelmsford Stakes New Zealand-bred horses have a good record in the Chelmsford Stakes, 10 of the last 15 races going to horses foaled in the Dominion. They were Rapine, Limerick (3), Phar Lap, Amnion Ra, Gaine Carrington, Gold <iod, Mala, and Royal Chief. v Limerick, who is still running in a paddock at Racecourse Hill, has a better record in the Chelmsford Stakes than any other winners of that race. He won three years in succession, and carried 71b penalty each time. Gloaming won the Chelmsford Stakes at his first appearance on the Turf, but was beaten at his two subsequent runs in that race. Beauford beat him in one race and Heroic in the other. The time recorded when Heroic won was lmin 50jsec. and that is still the record for the race. Royal Chief's time last Saturday was lmin 51jsec. Heroic beat Gloaming by a length and a half, the latter starting at 10 to 9 on.

Big Stake Winner A few weeks ago the American crack, Seabiscuit, added the Hollywood Gold Cup,, of £12.500, to his wins. Carrying 9-7, he beat nine others in 2min 3 4-ssec, a track record. Seabiscuit's share of the prize, with addition of sweepstakes, amounted to £7430. while £2500 went to second, £1250 to third, £625 to fourth, and £250 to fifth. It was Seabiscuit's seventy-ninth start for 28. wins, 13 seconds, and 11 thirds, his total earnings being £72,576. He is now sixth in America's list of stake-winners Richards Not Coming-

Australians will not have an oppor-j tunity of seeing Gordon Richards, this year at any rate, as last week he informed Mr Clive Leonard, the chairman of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, that he could not accept the invitation of the club to visit Australia as its guest. His reasons for declining the invitation will be given in a letter to the club. There are many difficulties in the way of Richards making such a long trip. He holds several retainers from owners, and as the flat racing season does not end until the last week in November he could not leave before the last day of the season. That would make it impossible for Richards to. arrive in Australia in time for the Christmas racing. American Champion Passes

Equipose, one of the most notable of American racehorses of recent years, and one of the great stake winners of the world, died recently* in the United States at Mr C. V. "Whitney's stud farm at Lexington, in Kentucky. Equipose, who was raced by Mr Whitney a few years ago, won 29 races, was placed in 14 others, and earned in stakes , £67,720. Sun Beau won £75,350. Equipose held the mile record for the United States, as he ran the distance at Arlington. Park as a four-year-old in June, 1932, in lmin 34 2-ssec, carrying 9-2, so it was a/notable performance. He was out at a period when good horses were plentiful, as he had among his opponents Twenty Grand, Mate, and Jamestown, and he more than held his own against them. Equipose was by Pennant (son of Peter Pan) from Swinging, by Broomstick from Balancoire 11., by Meddler from Ballantrae, by Ayrshire. Ballantrae being the winner of the Cambridgeshire in England in 1902. Ballantrae was also the dam of Mediant who won the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood in 1909. Equipose was standing at a fee of 1500 dollars, and his first progeny will race next year.

The winning record, for the distance in New South Wales is held by Sheik, whose net time is 4min 24sec. These times are based on the allowance of 12yds to the second. Sheik, in his effort, started from 168 yds be-

hind, and when he accomplished the feat in 1927 was adorned with the hopples." Logan Derby Successful

At the Perth meeting on Saturday, September 3, Logan Derby, the Tasmanian pacer, won the Manjimup Handicap in a sensational finish, beating Rustle and Lady Ghildewood. He received a great ovation for his longsustained run from last to first. The other winners were:—Fair Antique, Germanicus, Prince Yamma, Maori Star, Noel's Derby, and Lulu Gold. '
