IN THE PILLORY Brake Linings Cheaper Than* Pedestrians IBy COMMENTATOR] •-''■' Some urgent desire for economy seems, suddenly to have come over many motor- " . car drivers in this fair city. Motor-cars cost a . lot' of money, they . seem to be > thinking, and it would be a pity to be put to the trouble ■'., of fitting new brake linings every now and then: So they' . economise by nbt stopping unless they have to. One of the places where they are becoming most careful not to wear out their brakes is the pedestrian crossing. When - the neat white lines were first painted across city intersections the confusion that was caused was said by those in authority to be the fault of both pedestrians and motorists. Both would learn better intime. Well, it seems to me that many are learning—by bitter perience. And what they are learning is that if you want to get home safely for that meal, it's just as well to waive the" legal ri.eht-of-wav and let the motorist through .'- —because he'll, try to get through anyway. , '-'■" Of course, not''all pedestrians are Nature's jagift to road safety, and' a^lot take' unnecessary risks—but"''will the next person to hear of a motor-driver being hurt be- .' cause he was run down by a . pedestrian please ring me up. One of these days a pedes-, trian using his rights at a pedestrian crossing will wake up in hospital to the full realisation that he was perfectly in the right in going in front of that fast-ap-proaching car. but the only reward for it is a broken leg and a knowledge of his own Virtue. Just after 5 o'clock when the busy crossings have traffic inspectors on them pedestrians are much safer, because drivers know that wear;and tear on the brakes •sost less than fines. And 'those of them who are at \ , fault- everv dav in the city streets, had better take care, because one of these diys the traffic department will, for a change, allocate inspectors to some of the lesser-known and more abused pedestrian crossings for a day—in place of the usual pastime of walking round ornamenting my left-hand rear tyre with blue chalk. They'll wear the tyre out in time with that.
