FARM LABOUR
SHORTAGE IN SOUTH CANTERBURY
MINISTER TO BE APPROACHED
A decision to advice the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) that there is an acute shortage of farm labour in the. district, and tp remind him of his promise to release men from Public Works' jobs for farm work, was made at a meeting of the South .(Canterbury provincial executive or the New Zealand Farmei>s' Union yesterday. The secretary (Mr A. B. Struthers) said that an Albury farmer had told him that he was unable to obtain labour, of which there appeared to be an acute shortage. The trouble was, said Mr Struthers, that farm labour was being attracted away because of the standard rates of pay on public works' jobs. "The Minister has stated that he will release men from public works' jobs," said Mr A. J. Davy, who moved the motion.
Mr D. M. France said that a departmental officer went round several gangs in Timaru, and told the men that there was work for them in the country, but there was not one man who would go. The Minister was aware of the position.
