MARKED ACTIVITY IN BUILDING TRADE

72 POSITIONS FILLED DURING. WEEK

The Placement Officer advises that 72 positions were filled during the week. These were made up of 31 permanent appointments and the rest of a temporary nature. ,_' The building trade continues to show marked activity. Fully-qualified carpenters can be readily placed, and more activity has also been noted in the bricklaying and plumbing trades. So far there has been no great demand for painters, but with improved weather it is expected that a demand: may come soon. There is a good inquiry for registered electricians. ■':■. The week's placements included 20 farm hands, made up of all classes of workers, and included one married couple and two farm managers. There has been a-strong call for youths from 18 to 20 years for farm work, and the demand is difficult to meet.

Several inquiries have been received for youths from 19 to 25 years from farmers. These are under the Government subsidy scheme,, whereby young men are trained in all branches [ of farm work and are governed by approved conditions and standard rate's of pay. Four special apprenticeships were approved by, the district, registrar, of apprentices" during the week. ;
