OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September 16. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time o_ issue, is as follows:

Fresh to strong: northerly to north-westerly winds. Weather cloudy to overcast, with rain at first, but improving; temperatures moderate. Seas moderate, but rough north of Kaikoura.

WEST COAST The following is the forecast for the Coast of the South Island:—

Strong north-westerly to westerly winds, backing possibly to south-westerly during the weekend. Weather unsettled, with rain probable and some heavy falls, improving; possibly on Sunday. Temperatures moderate and seas rough.

DOMINION The following is the Dominion foreeast: —

Fair to cloudy at first in Canterbury and Otago, elsewhere cloudy to overcast and unsettled, with intermittent rain in most places and some heavy falls in central and western areas; temperatures modcrate. Pressure is high to the east. A shallow disturbance is located to the west of the North Island, and a deep westerly depression is advancing on to the southern portion of the Dominion.

Winds Between north-east and north-west prevailing at first, but turning temporarily to west or in places south-west in the far north and over the southern half of the South Island; force moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force in exposed positions from Taranaki southwards.

Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rough on the West Coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, and rather rough on the east coast north of Banks Peninsula, but moderate thence southwards. ■Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate winds between north-west and south-west, with moderate seas in the northern portion; strong north-westerly to westerly winds and rough seas in the southern portion.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

The weather in Christchurch yesterday was fine,, with sunshine in the afternoon. There was a north-easterly wind. The temperature became milder as the day advanced, the maximum reading being 58.8 degrees.

At 1 o'clock this morning the ■ky was clear and there -was no wind. The temperature was 50 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.7* Inches.

Wellington—The day was overcast and at times misty, with a moderate to strong northerly wind and intermittent light rain. The minimum temperature on Thursday night was 47.0 degrees. The maximum yesterday was 38.8 degrees. The barometer; stood at 29.832 in. ' •:•„•-

Dunedin: The sky was overcast yesterday and there was a cold breeze from the north-east. This fell away later in the day, and temperatures became warmer, the maximum being 58 degrees. The barometer fell steadily to 29.55 inches.
