PROPOSAL BY CHAMBER V OP COMMERCE
PUBLIC MEETING TO MR
CALLED
A move-to form a Territorial Association in Chrislchiirch is' being made by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, a deputation from which terday discussed the formation of the association -with the Mayor (Mr R. M. - Macfarlane), who agreed to call a public meeting as the first major step in the establishment of the organisation. This meeting will be held at 3 pan. on September.2B. _ The deputation consisted of Mr H. C Hurst, Major H. M. Foster, and the secretary dt the - chamber (Mr J. Roy Smith). It was stated that similar associations-had been formed in other centres and such an organisation was needed in. Christchurch. The chief object of the association would be to eive support to the present scheme of territorial training and to encourage suitable young men to undertake trainmii was explained that action had already been taken by the chamber to induce employers to allow young men; - time off to attend training, and in many establishments there were notices advising employees that they would be «riv»n the necessary tune m Ittend teaming. In one respect the deputation said, it would be the task althe association to mente for the trainees to be let off in .particular cases.
