THE STOCK EXCHANGES

LONDON MARKETS BEHAVE CALMLY

The London stock markets are behaving with remarkable calmness under the greatest tension since the crisis; in Europe began. The exchange opened weak on Wednesday. Quotations were marked down all round. Gilt-edged were down one to two points but they later recovered slightly.

The Berlin Bourse was very weak, the Reichsbank being down four points. /•

Following reports of outbreaks between the Sudeten Germans and the Czechs, there was a rush to sell stock on Wall Street. Sales totalled 2,820,000, and prices dropped by one tp fiye points. It later rallied by one to two points, but. there were recurring periods of concentrated selling in which priced melted.

Although industrial shares continued to ease on the Syd-

ney Stock Exchange yesterday, the rate of decline, was less" pronounced than on Wednesday. An exception was. Tooths, x which fell rather sharply. The Melbourne market opened quietly and closed with an improved tone for leading industrials. Barriers showed improvement.
