OBITUARY
MR J. Y. MOIR
.The death of Mr John Young Moir occurred at his residence, Cheviot, re- - cently. He was 61 years old. Mr Moir was bom-in Carnoustie, Scotland, -and with his parents and sisters arrived in- New Zealand in 1882. Th® family were early, settlers of the C'.tins river district, South Otago. As * young man he. visited Klondyke in the days of the gold boom and later served with the New Zealand Contingent at the South African War. Sawmilling interests in Otago occupied Mr Moir for some years. He -ater had -a general merchant’s business m South Canterbury, and in 1919 top* over a business in Cheviot which he carried on successfully until his death. Mr Moir took a great interest in the affairs of the district, being president of the Racing Club, Trotting Club, Hurunui Rugby - Sub-Union, Sports Club, and Football Club at various times.' He is survived by his widow, four daughters—Mrs A. Ranby, Mrs R. White, Mrs W.’Crampton, and Miss Evelyn Moir—and a son, John, all residents of Cheviot.. Mrs J. A. Calder and Mrs M. Byar, of Dunedin, are sisters. A large gathering assembled at the funeral at the Homeview cemetery. The casket was draped with a Union Jack by the Returned Soldiers Association. The service at the graveside was conducted -by the Rev’. KLeishman, assisted by Masonic brethren, who were also pall-bearers.
