“FIRST FRIENID” OF CATHEDRAL
ARCHBISHOP > JULIES
TRIBUTES PAID TO WORK FOR CHURCH AND CITY
. The death of the “First Friend” of the Christchurch Cathedral, Archbishop . Julius, was referred to at length at the annual meeting last night of the Friends of Christchurch Cathedral Association. In the lists of the association’s office-bearers, the Archbishop had previously held the title of First Friend. The following resolution was carried by the meeting:—“ That this meeting of Friends records with sincere regret the passing of their First Friend, Archbishop Julius, and places on record their sincere appreciation of such a wonderful'life spent in'the service of ithe church and the whole community.” The secretary-treasurer of the association, Mr C. H; Clemens, moving the resolution, said it , was impossibly to idescribe in words. - ,the appreciation, of ithe Friends .of the .Cathedral ,bf so ‘great a life' and, personality, both in the history of the Cathedral and of the ■city. His had : been I 'the life of a real Christian man spent - not only in the service of his Church but in the service of the whole community. He had watched both the church and the city grow together, and had been a tower of strength to both. “We all' know of the wonderful work he did among the orphanages and the poor, but he also did a tremendous amount of work of which the general public knew nothing. The loss of such a life as this will leave a big gap in the community, and our association has indeed lost a real friend. The good that he has done, however, will live -ohr through- • ■ the • ages”’ added - Mr Clemens.
