Men’s Singles H. C. Hopman beat .McNeill, 6-4, 6-S,

7-5. B. M. Grant beat A. K. Quist, 6-1, 4-6. 6-1. 7-3. Hopman won almost at will His opponent’s backhand was vulnerable, but above all. the Australian’s shots were coming off to perfection. He mixed Ms pace successfully, and took the net with telling effect. The match between Quist and Grant was disappointing. Footfaults were constantly called against the Australian, and his play was below normal. Kis backhand was strangely weak, and he repeatedly took the net at the wrong moment. The quarter finals will bring Hopman and Budge, Grant and Wood, Bromwich and J. Hunt, and Mako and Gilbert Hunt together.
