JAPANESE SUFFER REVERSE
DRIVE ON HANKOW CHECKED

TOKYO, September 14.
The most direct drive to Hankow was checked at Kzangtsi, where 40;000 Chinese are counter-attacking. The Japanese claim to have captured Matouchen, on the southern bank of the Yangtse-kiang, breaking the Chinese third defence line.

WELLINGTON, September 15.
The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Hankow:—
“The Japanese, advancing by way of the Yangtse-kiang, suffered a defeat and made no progress. They had been reinforced in the- east of Honan, and planned to advance westward to capture Sinyang, and from thence to march southward to Hankow.
“At present there is severe fighting at Taolinpoo and Whangkangsze, 31 miles west of Whangchuen. “The Chinese positions remain intact at these two places. South of the Yangtse-kiang the Japanese repeatedly attacked Shikuling. jnear Singtze, but all their attacks were repulsed.”
