An application by’the employers tc have the cardboard box, carton, cardboard container, and paper bag workers in the North Island covered by an award, was heard before the Conciliation Commissioner,,Mr M.J. Reardon,, at Wellington to-day. Complete agreement was reached. The award is. tobe extended later to South Island workers exclusive of females in Dunedin city The industry had not previously, been covered by an, award. . . The workers cross-cited for a Dominion award. > but .after- conference -in. chambers, it was' agreed that the negotiations should apply to the North Island workers only, and the cross-cita-tion -was, treated’ as a list of counter proposals. ' A 40-hour week w»»- agr«id . to and., overtime' at timeVgftd-•'i’-half J!or the first three hours, and double-time thereafter. Nine statutory holidays are provided and one ■ week’s holiday on full pay. - The following scale. of wages was agreed upon:—Skilled hands, £5 10s r week; cylinder carton machinists, £f ss; guillotine machine operators, from £2 10s in the first year to £5 in this fifth year, and £5.5s thereafter; platen press machinists, £5 Ss; all other adull male workers. £4 13s 4d; junior, from 17s 6d, in the first six months to £2 10s in the fifth year, and adult rates thereafter; female workers, from 17s 6r in the first year, to £2 5s in .the filth year and £2 10s thereafter;* 1 ’ , -
The new wage rates will come-into force on' October 1, and all the other provisions when, the award is-made, by the Court. 1 . ■
