NORTH CANTERBURY NEWS

DRAMA FESTIVAL AT RANGIORA

CONCLUDING PLAYS PRESENTED

DISTRICT COMPETITIONS WON

BY AMBERLEY

The annual drama festival of the North Canterbury area of the British Drama League was concluded in the Rangiora Town Hall on Wednesday night, when four more plays were presented. The Amberley Drama Circle was awarded first place with “Tarnish,” and will compete in the South Island finals, at Dunedin next month, of the league’s Dominion competition. The cast of the winning play showed easily the best team work, being well balanced and effectively grouped, said the judge, Mr D. E. Dali, of Christchurch.

Number one team of the Oxford Drama Circle was placed second. Its play, “The Charlady and the Angel,” was commended by the judge, and the team was congratulated for its enterprise in attempting this play. The visionary scene of the angel appearing at the window was particularly impressive, he said, the whole conception having been sensitively rendered. Seven of the nine one-act plays presented were modern. It was a pity, said the judge, that there was not a greater variety in the plays selected. The sophisticated characters in the modern plays were, rather difficult for amateurs to portray successfully. It was well for a team to select a play which matched the capabilities of each member of the cast. He added that he was pleased to see a play by a New Zealand author among the productions.

Congratulating the winning team on its success, the vice-president of the North Canterbury area (Mrs J. W. Macleod) said that in view of the difficulty in obtaining players to fill male parts, she thought that the standard in acting reached at the festival was high. The president (Mr W. E. Cook) thanked the judge for his comprehensive criticism of the productions, and expressed the opinion that players would benefit by his criticism. Appreciation of the assistance given by the stage manager (Mr F. A. Lane) during the festival was also expressed. The nine teams which were entered in the festival were from Sefton, Waipara, Rangiora, Amberley, View Hill, and Kaiapoi.

The cast of the winning play is as follows:-—Mrs W. E. Cook, Miss M. Frew, the Rev. F. N. Taylor, Messrs L. Cook. W. E. Cook. J, ID. Boyce, and IM. Richardson.

FARMING AT RANGIORA

CHANGE OF WEATHER WELCOMED

SHORTAGE OF GRASS SEED REPORTED

General relief at the change of weather during the last few days is expressed by farmers in the Rangiora district. As well as making conditions more agreeable for the ewes and lambs, the warm sunshine and northwest wind will do much toward im-. proving land in the down country for late sowing, they say.

Several farmers who are preparing ground for ryegrass have remarked on the shortage of grass seed and concern is expressed in various quarters about the likelihod of there being sufficient supplies for this season. Because of the wet weather last year, it is claimed that there is a definite shortage of ryegrass in the country. Farmers have very little on hand and merchants in Rangiora say they are holding only very small stocks. Commenting on a report that some farmers in the district were induced to sow linseed because they were afraid that the last unexpected rain would lessen the chance of late wheat sowing being successful, Mr J. Tutton, a miller of, Rangiora, said that Marquis wheat could be sown down now and during October. Last year, Mr Tutton said, a farmer drilled Marquis wheat in the second week of November and obtained a satisfactory yield. For the last few weeks, he added, there had been many demands by farmers in the district for supplies of Marquis wheal for late sowing.
