GROWER AND CONSUMER TO BE PROTECTED
PROPOSED IMPORTATION OF TOMATO PULP [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 14. An assurance that both the New Zealand grower and consumer would be protected if it was decided to allow the importation of tomato pulp into the Dominion was given by the Minister for Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) in the House of Representatives today in answer to a question from Mr A. C. A, Sexton (Independent, Franklin). “No permits have been granted for the importation this season,” said the Minister, “and before any subsequent facilities are granted, steps will first be taken to ascertain the actual stocks on hand, and the potential crop.”
In answer to a question from Mr W. A. Bodkin (National, Central Otago) and Mr K. J. Holyoake (National, Motueka) the Minister said that the question of removing the embargo on the importation of cherries and other stone fruits from Australia had not at any time been considered by the present Government,
