Mrs Geoffrey Kingscote (Fendalton) has returned from a visit to Chateau Tongariro.

Mrs J. F. Green (Beverley street), who has been spending the winter in Auckland, will return to Christchurch this morning.

Miss Betty Rutherford (Macdonald Downs, Hawarden), _ who has been visiting Australia, is expected to return home this week. Mr and Mrs P. Lucas returned from the North Island yesterday morning.

Mr and Mrs R. Efoldgate (Greymouth), who were the guests of Mrs R. Holdgate (Timaru), have returned to the West Coast. Mrs Derrick Gould is visiting her mother, Mrs A. S. Elworthy, Holme Station.

Mrs C. Kerr (Rata Peaks) is staying with Miss Loo Cartwright, Timaru.

Mrs P. A. Elworthy (Gordon’s Valley) has returned from a visit to her sister, Miss Julius, Cashmere Hills.

Mrs J. S. Kelly established two records for the Plunket Society’s street appeal yesterday. After' making her annual visit to the saleyards, accompanied by Miss Hilray Fisher, she assisted with collections in the city. Her collections amounted to more than £ 15, the record box for this year’s appeal. This is the twenty-fifth year that she has assisted with the collections.

Miss Phyllis Brass (Beverley street), who left Christchurch three months ago for Great Britain, has been, appointed as a resident mistress. on the staff of the English Girls’ College, Alexandria. She will leave England shortly to take up her new position. The wedding of Brigadier-General A. C. Critchley, the well-known English sportsman, and Miss Diana Fishwick, the equally well-known woman golfer, took place at the British Consulate in Paris on August 23. Mr C. S. Dempster, the New Zealand cricketer, who is to play for Sir Julien Cahn’s eleven in the Dominion, will be married on October 27 to Miss Margaret Elizabeth .Towers, eldest daughter of the late Mr Joseph Jowers and Mrs Constance Jowers, of Leicester. The ceremony will be at Holy Trinity Church, Leicester. The first evening’s play of a twonight Howell match at Crockford’s Club resulted as follows: —North and South; Mrs J. M. Turnbull and Mrs F. An enjoyable time was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs J. Annand (Somerfic-ld), when Miss Yensie 'Dobbs was entertained at a “kitchen” gift party. Those present included Miss Yensie Dobbs, Mr and Mrs Charles Dobbs, Mr and Mrs E. Jones, Mr and Mrs A. Annand, Mr and Mrs J. Annand, Mrs G. Aldersley, Misses Shirley Dobbs. Hazel Dobbs, Hetty Massey, Thelma Boyce, Daphne Peryer, Joyce Wicks. Shirley and Betty Annand, Messrs Alan Akins, S. and M. Annand, P. Spear, and George Dobbs. COSTUME CARNIVAL BALL ST. BARNABAS YOUNG MEN’S FELLOWSHIP The costume carnival ball organised by the St. Barnabas Young Men’s Fellowship, and held last evening in St. Barnabas’ Schoolroom. Clyde road, proved most enjoyable, and guests spent a pleasant time dancing to music supplied by Mr Harrison’s orchestra. Amongst those present were Misses Doreen Tourell, Phyllis Beckworth, A. Williams, Joan Hamilton, Lesley Moor, Betty Evans, Alison Gourlay, Daphne Cook. Fay Hammond. Pat Rogers, H Harrison, Thyra Hill, Pat and June McGregor, Dorothy Benger, Edna Rowe. COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES An evening party was held at the home of Mr and Mrs T, D. ..Murphy (Canon street, St. Albans), in honour of the coming-of-age of their third daughter, Patricia (Pat). The time was spent in games' apd community singing, the games being won by Misses E. Green, R. Owens, J. Murphy, Messrs P. Diebert and R. Arney. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs T. D. Murphy, Mr and Mrs L. V. Glanville, Mesdames Baird, Rothwell, , Moncrief, Misses Pat. Murphy, C. Fuller, S. Guest, S. Hogg Joy Ewing, Eva Green, Rona Murphy, Kathleen Highsted, Mollie, Joan, Kathleen, and Colleen Murphy, Nancy Rothwell, Rima Owens. Nettie Haughey, Alma Goggin, Messrs Maurice Murphy, P. Diebert, George Bilspn, R. Amey, C. Hannigan, Maurice Costello, J. Healey, lan Bain, and V. Leeming.

A pleasant time was spent in the kindergarten schoolroom, Selwyn street, when friends gathered to cele-i brate the coming-of-age of Mr Albert F. Day, second son of Mr and. Mrs A. D. Day (Linwood). The time was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Mrs Creash. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr C. Tann and Miss G. Fitzsimmons, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr L. Hughes and Mrs A. D. Day. Mr E. Eldridge acted as master of ceremonies.
