RELIEF FROM LAND TAX
COMMITTEE’S WORH NOT YET FINISHED fProm Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. September 14. Information on the position of taxpayers who pleaded hardship as a reason for remissions of taxes was sought in an urgent question asked by Mr R. A. Wright (Independent, Wellington Suburbs) of the Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Wright asked the Minister whether, under section 20 of the Finance Act, 1927. a special committee was set up to consider and make recommendations in respect of claims received before January 31, 1938. for relief of any taxpayer on the ground of hardship from his liability in whole or in part for land tax imposed for the years ended March 31. 1936 and 1937. If so, would the Minister relieve the anxiety of taxpayers concerned by making a Statement as to their position. As assessments of land tax for the current year had been issued during the last month, taxpayers interested wished to know whether their taxes were to be reduced. The Minister said that the committee had been set up and had been, working for some months. It had not yet finished; but when its recommendations were received he would make a statement. _
