Destrqyer May Visit Auckland CONSOLIDATION OF DEFENCE LINES (PRESS ASSOCIATIOK TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, September 14. Included in the series of long distance exercises to be conducted by the United States navy in the Pacific, a visit to Auckland next month is reported to be planned for the destroyer Maury, This is one of a number of moves to be made by the United States for the consolidation of aerial and naval defence lines in the Pacific with those of Britain and France. The departure of the* Maury on a secret mission to the South Pacific was announced in a cable hnessage from Honolulu. Although advice of the visit of the destroyer to Auckland has been received privately, no confirmation has been obtained by the United States Consul, Mr J. C. Groeninger. Named after a famous American naval figure, the destroyer was the first of a number of the Maury class launched in the 1935 programme. She has a 1500 tons displacement, and her 42,800 horse power engines are capable of driving her at 36 J knots. The Maury carries five sin guns, eight 21in torpedo tubes, and eight machine-guns. Her complement totals 190.
