Children’s Creche To Be Opened BENEFIT TO MOTHERS FORESEEN A decision to convert the hostel at the Rangiora High School into a children’s creche for use on Tuesdays (subject to approval by the Education Department) was made by the High School Board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. It will probal ly be early in October before the creche is opened, and it will be conducted by Miss Doreen Dolton under the auspices of the Association for Country Education. !
Miss Dolton, who was present at the meeting of the board, said that the scheme would benefit mothers coming into Rangiora from the country on market day. since they would be able to leave their children at the creche while shopping. Girls at the high school who are taking the home science course would also benefit, as they could supplement their theoretical work with practical experience. The creche would be almost ideally situated, Miss Dolton said. Children from two to five years of age would be taken on Tuesdays from early morning to about 4 p.m. A contribution of £1 Is was made by the board to the Canterbury Progress League. BOWLING, TENNIS, AND CROQUET SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT RANGIORA A successful year was reported by all sections of the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club (Inc.), at the annual meeting of the club i Tuesday evening. The total membership of the clv.b was 160, an increase of 26 on that of the previous year, said the retiring president (Mr F. T. Ager); -iespectivc memberships were (figures for the previous year in parenthesis): Bowlers 42 (35); tennis players, 75 (52); croquet players, 30 (29); honorary members, 13 (18).
Congratulating the committee on its year's work, Mr R. Mclntosh said that an effort should be made by members this season to improve and beautify the grounds. He also appealed to members to build up the club’s financial renurces by trying to win new subscribers or, failing that, by holding socials throughout the season. It should be the aim of each member to do something that would advance the interests of the club.

The opening day was fixed for October 1. / MAGISTRATE’S COURT • AT RANGIORA FORTNIGHTLY SITTING HELD A, fine of 10s, with an order to pay costs, was imposed upon Lewis Douglas McDonald, of Woodend, when he appeared before Mr E, C. LeVvey, S.M;, in the Magistrate’s Court at Rangiora yesterday, for failing -to keep to the left. On two other charges of having no warrant of fitness and • insufficient lights, he was ordered to pay costs. Sergeant O. P. McEntee, who conducted the proceedings for the police, said the defendant had been involved in a motor accident in which he was seriously injured. He had just been discharged from hospital and was not likely to be fit for work again. Mr H. K. Kippenberger appeared for the defendant. • On Licensed Premises For being found on licensed premises after hours, L. Adams, R. Hutchison, and Oliver Spriggs were each fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. Constable R. Drummond said that he naff visited the Oust Hotel after closing time, when he had seen the defendants. All three /were first offenders. Traffic Cases For failing to keep a time book for persons employed as goods service vehicle drivers, Samuel James Youngman, being the holder of a goods’ service licence, was fined 10s and ordered to pay- costs. Inspector J. H. Clark, of the Transport Department, said > that the case was a serious one, but as it was the first in the district, the deSartment did not wish to press for a eavy penalty. ■ ' _ . Hubert Miles was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs for failing to signal his intention to turn to the right. ' For riding a bicycle without a light, Joseph Walter Stephens was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. Civil Cases Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases:—H. Hammond v. R. Meyer, £3 5s 4d, BADMINTON FRIENDLY MATCH PLAYED AT CULVERDEN A friendly badminton, match was played in Culverden recently between Durham Street Methodist Club and the Culverden Club, and was won by the visitors - by 5 games to 3. OPENING OF NEW HALL
CEREMONY PERFORMED AT, KAITUNA WORK BY VOLUNTARY LABOUR residents assembled recently at the opening of the new hall. Mr D. S. Anderson, chairman of the building committee, welcomed all those present, giving details of how the building was erected by voluntary labour, all the residents having assisted during the winter. He said he was also pleased to say that the hall was being opened free of debt. Those who spoke were Messrs G. Turrel, F. and J. O. Coop, who congratulated the district. Mr W. F. Parkinson, the oldest resident of the district, performed the opening ceremony. Afternoon tea was provided by the women in the hall. A dance followed in the evening. FAREWELL SOCIAL AT OXFORD PRESENTATION TO CHURCH MEMBER A farewell social given by the congregation on Tuesday night in the Oxford Methodist Church to Mr and Mrs D. J. Hawke, who have spent their lives in Oxford and are about to leave for Christchurch. - The Rev. A. H. Fowles presided, and there was a good attendance. Mr Hawke, for more than 30 years, has been associated with the church in some official capacity, as Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, trustee, and circuit steward. „ Addresses were given by Mr Fowles, Messrs L. Watson (circuit), W. M. Dailey (trustee), and A. N. Cederman (choir). An anthem was sung by the choir, a trio by Mr and Mrs and Miss Rossiter, and solos by Mrs C. C. Early, Miss H. Beer, and Mr Cederman. For the congregation, Mr L. Watson presented Mr and Mrs Hawke and family with a dining-room clock. Mr Hawke spoke of incidents in church, life since his association with it.

Johnson were elected honorary life members of the club at its annual meeting on Tuesday evening. CHEVIOT Miss A. Culien, who has been spending a holiday as the guest of Mrs G. McClelland, "Cheddar Valley.” Miss Kathleen Newton (Christchurch) is staying with Mr and Mrs D. C. Macfarlane, Mount Paul. Mr Dodge (Christchurch) is spending a holiday with his father, Mr S. Dodge (Waiau). Miss J. Mcßride, who has been on holiday in Akaroa, has returned to WaiaU. NATIONAL PARTY ADDRESS GIVEN TO ELECTORS AT KAIKOURA Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P. for Central Otago, addressed a very large and enthusiastic audience in the Show Ground pavilion at Kaikoura, in support of the candidature of Mr E. F. Healey for the WSirau electorate. He was supported on the platform by Mr J. A. Elkington. Mr F. jrmonk occupied the chair and introduced Mr Bodkin, who was given a very good hearing Mr Bodkin attacked the Government for the way in which it had treated the primary producers. He maintained that the farmer was the mainstay of New Zealand, and with the present taxation it was very difficult for the farmer to make a living. Mr Bodkin spoke for more than two hours. There .were several interjectors,'which the speaker handled humorously. Many questions were asked. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Bodkin.
KAIKOUEA DISTRICT BASKETBALL In a basketball match placed on the Hapuku School grounds Kaikoura A beat Rovers A by 9 goals to 6. Kaikoura B was heated by Rovers B by 20 goals to 5. Messrs D. Manson and J. Davidson were thq referees. ■ A team of players ‘ from the Rovers Club played Oaro, at Oaro, the home team being beaten by 20 goals to 8. WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION The final meeting of the 1938 session of the Akaroa branch of the Workers’ Educational Association was held at the home of the leader, Mrs A. W. Aitchison, "Pilgrim Cottage,” Aylmer street. Mr W. Johnson, M.A., of Canterbury University College, tutor organiser for Canterbury, gave a talk on adult education in America, and on his recent visit to the United States. Members were entertained by Mrs Aitchison at supper.
YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB AT LITTLE RIVER A meeting of the Little River Young Farmers’ Club was held recently. Mr R. Chapman presided. An address was given by Dr. I. W. Weston, of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, on financing a farm. The district secretary, Mr L. W. Blackmore (Christchurch), also spoke. .

ANNUAL MEETING OF KAIAPOI CLUB The president, • Miss P. Fearce, presided at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Tennis Club. In reviewing the club’s activities for last season the committee reported that senior and intermediate teams had been entered i the North Canterbury Sub-Association competitions. The senior team had won four games and lost three, and the intermediate team had won nve and lost two. ■ The club had also been represented at the sub-association’s senior and junior games. - The junior men s singles had been won by L. Robson, the ]un ior men’s doubles by L. Robson and R. Livingstone and the mixed doubles by L. Robson and Miss O. Pearce. In the handicap events Robson and Livingstone won the mens doubles and Livingstone and Miss Watkins (Southbrook) won the mixed doubles. The club competitions had been keenly contested, L. Morris again won the three championship titles and, secured a place on the Canterbury ranking list. Miss. M. Logan won the women’s singles and the mixed doublechampionships. The club competitions had resulted as follows;—Men’s singles championship, L. Morris: women’s singles championship, Miss M. Logan; men’s doubles championship, L. Morris and M. rl Lilley; women’s doubles championship Mesdames J. S. Baker and E. E. Eves, mixed doubles championship, L- Morris and Miss M. Logan; men’s handicap singles, K. Halligan: women’s handicap singles, Miss M. Logan; presidents trophy, Mrs E. J. Corcoran and L Oram. . ', Although the expenditure had exceeded the income by £lO, the committee expressed its satisfaction at the financial position of the club. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £2l. It was decided to hold the official opening of the season on September 24 The club’s delegates to the North Canterbury Sub-Association were instructed to support the playing of matches on alternate Saturdays, and that a reduction be made in representative matches.
WAIKARI CLUB MEETS The annual meeting of the Waikari Tennis Club was held recently in the Waikari Hall. Mr R. W. Tucker presided. The annual report showed that the club had had a very successful season and had challenged successfully for and held the Mander banner. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £47 Is 3d. The following officers were elected: President, Mr C. H. Bethell: vice-pre-s’donts. Dr. J. B. Page and Messrs W. A. Harris, W. Killoh, T. B. Adams, A. Watt, and H. Phillips; club captain, Mr E. W. There was a good attendance of members and visitors, and many enjoyable games were played. Mr Inch, the president of the club, declared the courts open. CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL AT CULYERDEN W. LAKE WINS MEN’S TITLE W. Lake won the Culverden men’s golf championship, which was held over 72 holes. The best net score in the senior wsfs won by.L. E. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL AT HORORATA In the final of the junior championship played by the Hororata Gclf Club A. Charles beat R. G. Keith. " . A medal match played in conjunction with the second round of the Pearson deck and the last round of the Sime Cup resulted in a tie between A. D. Oliver and W. O. Gray, each 75 net. The Pearson deck was won by A. D. Oliver 149, the next best --ires being, W. O. Gray 155. J. Ballagb 151, R. G. Keith 164. The Sime handicap aggregate cup, played over the whole of the season, was won bv W. O. Gray 292. The next best scores Were E. H. Sime 293. A. D Oliver 294 . H. A Oliver 205, R. Murray 303, H. G. MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY To conclude the season, the Horrelville Mutual Improvement Society held a social evening recently. Games ana competitions were held. The commutee responsible for the arrangements was Misses May Blackmore, Joyce Graham, Hilda Sheat, Vera Bradley, and Mr Leslie Blackmore. Competitions were won by Miss H. Beer and Mr L. Blackmore. HAPUKU GOLF CLUB’S DANCE The Hapuku Golf Club held a dance at the Suburban Hall, Kaikoura. There was a very large attendance. Music was played by Mr F. Taylor’s Rhythm Band, and extras by Messrs E. Scott, A. Popplewell, and B. O’Brien. _ Mr R. Smith was master of ceremonies. The ludjy-spot waltz was won by Miss D. Knott and Mr M. Dickson, and the lucky spot one-step by Miss D. Barrtes and partner.
EUCHRE PARTY HELD AT HORORATA A progressive euchre party was organised by the Hororata School Committee to raise funds for the. Christmas tree and prize fund for the school children. The first prize for the women was won by Mrs M. Thorne, with Mrs Hobbs second. Mrs J. Keltic won the consolation prize. The men’s prizes were won by Mr B. Oliver 1, Mr C. Keith 2, and Mr D. Yaxley consolation prize.
