SUGGESTIONS TO ENGINEERS* CONFERENCE [THE PRESS Special Servicc.l WELLINGTON, September 14. The idegl of all power transmission -linesbeing -placed underground was emphasised, by Mr A. Tyndall, Director of Housing Construction, when addressing the Power, Boards’ Engineers conference to-day. Mr, Tyndall said that it was only a matter of time before the voice of the people would demand that'.that practice should be adopted. *■ ' ■ • _ > In its housing scheme the Government had endeavoured to carry put that plan, but had met with varying degrees of cordiality, and a, compromise had been made by placing ;power poles down back boundaries.- It was a 'step in the right direction, but he did not think much of it ; ' He suggested that a committee from the conference might discuss the matter with the Housing Construction Department with a view to arriving at some uniformity for the Dominion. The multiplicity of regulations was also criticised by Mr Tyndall,-who remarked that twice the amount of timber was required to carry an iron roof in Wellington than was required in Auckland. In view of the recent controversy over Wellington’s weather that was interesting. Mr E. F. Hollands (Hutt Valley) said that he agreed with Mr Tyndall’s suggestion. Poles on back boundaries might be troublesome with radio aerials, kites, and string, or other objects with which children played. The conference appointed a committee to confer with the Housing Construction Department on the subject-
