ENTERTAINMENT AT GREYMOUTH
MILITARY UNIT LEAVES FOR WESTPORT [THE PRESS Special Service.] GREYMOUTH. September 14. Punctually at 9 a.m, to-day the Army Service Corps unit from Christchurch. which is on a trek under service conditions to the West Coast, broke camp at Victoria Park and moved oil by the coast road to Westport. From Westport the unit will return to Christchurch through Reefton and the Lewis Pass. The officers and men of the unit were the guests last evening of the Greymouth Returned Soldiers Association at a smoke concert. More than 200 persons were present, and the gathering was one of the most successful ever held by the association. Appropriate toasts were honoured and musical and elocutionary items were given. Supper was provided by a committee of women, with Mrs Lindop in charge. Brigadier-Geieral W. Meldrum presided and Mr T. Crankshaw was toast master. , . The following toasts were honoured: “The King”; “The New Zealand Army Service Corps” (proposed by the chairman and responded to by Captain Stock): “Local Bodies (Mr T P. Ryan, the Mayor, Mr F. A. Kitchingham): “The Army. Navy, and Air Force” (the chairman. Captam Johnston, Staff Corps, Nelson); t The New Zealand Returned Soldiers Association” (Mr T. H. Jones. Colonel Butcher); “Greymouth Returned Soldiers Association and Territorials (Captain Stock, Mr Crankshaw. and SergeantMajor A. Johnston. A.S.C.). Items were given by Messrs J. unity, D Goulden, D. Steers. G. Brown. T. Jones, Marley brothers, and Sergeant Rattray. A.S.C. Mr J. Paterson was pianist. _ DELAY IN ARRIVAL AT WESTPORT [THE PRESS Special Service.] WESTPORT, September 14. There was a delay in the arrival of the unit of the Army Service Corps from Christchurch at Westport to-day because of minor hold-ups on the journey from Greymouth. On arrival at 5.30 p.m. the party was met by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr E. R. Fox) and members of local bodies. . . The visitors were guests to-mght ot Westport territorials at a ball, at which an official welcome was extended by the Deputy-Mayor. Rear-Admiral Sydenham, and Major Potter (Westport). Captain E, J. Stock replied for the visiting company.
