ADDINGTON MARKET

fat stock easier GOOD DEMAND FOR WETHER HOGGETS The weekly market yesterday was only moderately attended by farmers, who are busy making up leeway in farm work. Generally there was a weakening tendency, fat cattle, fat sheep, fat pigs, and vealers being concerned. The warm weather possibly had something to do with the slacker demand. Store sheep sold generally at recent rates, but good wether hoggets, which had slipped to very poor prices in the last few weeks, recovered by from 2s to 2s 6d a head. The warmer weather is bringing growth along, and hoggets for shearing seem to be at an atabout V l^ P n lC h’ .■ Fat sheep were easier by *“5 ? s a head, and the market is very much lower than it was a year ago. One pen of 70 made 15s, another of 68 14s Bd, and a smaller pen Ids 9d, whilst medium sold at 12s, and inferior at down to Bs. For the comparatively few pens of good ewes and lambs forward there was a sharp improvement, one small pen of 30 particularly good four, six. and eight-tooth, with 33 lambs, selling at 17s 3d, all counted. Medium lines sold unchanged at about 11s, and some rough old ewes at down to 3s. A pen of two. sold at 27s 3d and others at 23s 3d, the market showing little change for this class, and there was no improvement for wethers. A rather good pen of four-tooths sold at 20s 9d. Some prime sorts were forward, and for these there was keen competition at prices up to 37s lOd, or an average of about 14d a pound. There was a big proportion of unfinished lambs, however, and for this class there was an casing to about Is a pound. Sales were:— Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., sold:--On account of H. M. Though the entry as a whole was of moderate quality there were some outstanding pens forward from district centres and South Canterbury. The sale was a sluggish one throughout and last week’s prices were not maintained. The easing for the general run of sheep was about Is a head, and towards the end of the sale passings were fairly numerous. The good quality pens did not show much change. There were a few pens of shorn sheep forward. Amongst the better lines offered was one exceptionally prime lot of 27 wethers from J. and P. Clinton (Darfleld). which made from 33s Id to 38s Td, a pen of four at the top price. A pen of 20 hoggets from R. Dawson (West Eyrcton) sold at from 25s 4d to 29s lOd. FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle section com* prised 465 head, compared with 542 last week. Quality, however, showed no improvement, the big proportion of the penning comprising steers that were Just ‘‘killable,” whilst the usual proportion of inferior cows was to the fore. This class is forming too heavy a proportion of the beef penning, and it is time that there was more rigidity in the grading. The market opened at about 15s a head below last week's rates, and from tills to 20s a head marked the decline throughout, except for the small proportion of the primes! pens. The market was dull over the concluding stages, and It would seem that an entry of to-day’s size fully provides for the needs of butchers. Outside lines included some from the Coast and one from Southland. Good beef made up to 33s per 1001 b, and tops to 40s, with heavy weights from 34s to 37s 6d. Top price for steers was £l9 17s 6d, for one from Miss I. Rutherford (Montrose), and nine heifers from T. Masefield (Akaroa) sold at from £ll 12s 6d to £l3 12s 6d. VEALERS There was a medium-sized entry in Idle vealer section, comprising 220 head. The yarding comprised mostly small calves. Quality was Indifferent, but a few outstanding calves were on offer. Runners, which of late have been -in small supply, sold particularly well. One truck lot of heifer runners sold at from £0 8s 6d to £8 18s 6d. Small calves, on account of the large supply, were again easier—by about 4s to 7s a head but any other class showing quality met with a free sale at up to recent rates. Values were:— Best runners, to £9 Is. Heavy runners, £6 18s Gd to £7 IBs Gd. Medium runners. £4 Gs to £6 ls.| Prime vcalers, £4 11s to £7 8s Gd. Medium calves, 32s to £3 Is. Small calves, 9s to 30s. STORE CATTLE The entry in the store cattle section was of medium size, but it contained few lines of straight colours. Oner pen of eight four-year-old bullocks sold at £lO 14s, and a pen of eight cows ready for fattening £5 2s. The sale was a good firm one for anything fit for putting on fattening feed. DAIRY CATTLE The dairy cattle entry was smaller than usual, comprising only 63 head. There were few cows of more than average quality forward, but there were some nice Jersey heifers. These were In demand and sold at up to £ll 5s for Iwo-year-olds. Best cow price was £ll. Generally there was slight improvement, there being freer buying from factory supPherS FAT PIGS There was a much heavier entry in the porker section, and prices were easier all round by from 2s to 3s a head. Butchers found the supply of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale to-day well below their requirements, and as the quality of the beef seen a* the sale was

unusually good, bidding was keen, and the market was £1 10s a head higher than a week ago. The Increase was shared by all classes. There were 230 head penned. In the store cattle section a small pen of four and five-year steers made to £l2 10s, and three and four-year steers realised £8 5s to £9. About 2100 fat sheep were penned, a large proportion being medium to prime ewes. The demand was slack front the start, and all grades were down by 2s to 3s a head. Towards the end it was difficult to effect sales, and there were numerous passings. Extra prime heavy wethers made to £1 14s 9d, prime £1 8s to £1 Us 9d, medium £1 3s 3d to £1 6s 3d. light 'l7s to £1 3s; extra prime heavy*ewes to £1 7s fid, prime 19s fid to £1 2s 9d. medium 16s to 19s 3d, and light and unfinished 10s 6d to 15s 9d. TEMUKA The market at the Temuka sale for beef was a sound one, a large entry coming forward. Fat sheep showed an improvement, and store cattle again met with good competition.
