ESTIMATE OF COST

WELLINGTON, September 13,

The cost of the increases involved in the higher rates of war pensions and allowances provided for in the Finance Bill were given by the Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in moving the second reading of the bill in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Nash said the cost of raising the economic pension from 25s to 30s was estimated at £45,000 a year. Pensions were also to be provided for New Zealanders who went to the South African War from Australia or Great Britain, and it was estimated that this would cost £3OOO. The cost of increasing the war veterans’ allowances had been estimated at £85,000 a year. A clause by clause explanation of the other sections in the bill was also given by the Minister.
