NO REFERENCE TO POSSIBILITY OF PEACEFUL SOLUTION

State of Emergency Proclaimed In

Sudeten Areas

Earlier optimism about Herr Hitler’s policy statement at the Nuremberg Congress has given place in many quarters to serious misgivings because of the absence of any reference to the possibility of & peaceful solution of the Sudeten question.

On the other hand, Herr Hitler’s allusions to Czechoslovakia were emphatic in their demand for the right of self-determination for the Germans, and their promise of help if it should be needed.

A serious view is said to be held by the French Cabinet which feels that Herr Hitler cannot now run the risk of retreating again before the energy of Britain and France.

Keen public interest has been shown in the United States where there is a feeling of relief that there is no immediate threat of war. At the same time the newspapers urge a clearer enunciation of the country’s policy, so that, if there are commitments to Britain, Herr Hitler may be made aware of them before it is too late.

As a result of disturbances and violence in the Sudeten areas, the Czech Government has proclaimed a state of emergency in five Sudeten departments with the object of preserving order.
