THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Policy Speech By Mr Savage ADDRESS IN WELLINGTON NEXT WEEK [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. September 13. The policy on which New Zealand's first Labour Government will go to the electors seeking a further term of office will be disclosed in a speech to be delivered by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), in the Wellington Town Hall, some time next week. This information was given by Mr Savage in an interview this evening.
“The election campaign will open in earnest very shortly after the House rises.” the Prime Minister said. “My policy speech on behalf of the Government will be made in Wellington some lime next week, and it will be broadcast. The same facilities for stating the National Party’s case will, of course, be extended to the Leader of the Opposition, and I shall give a complete outline of the arrangements for political broadcasting during the campaign before the end of the session. Mr Savage said he proposed to do a fair amount of travelling during the campaign, although he would not be able to visit every place in New Zealand. However, he would visit all the main centres, and would spend a short time in his own electorate. “I am afraid I shall not be able to spend very long in my own electorate,” the Prime Minister added. “With the position I hold my responsibility is to all the people in New Zealand, and 1 can best discharge my responsibility to the electors of Auckland West by endeav-. ouring to work for the good of the I Dominion as a whole.” j CANDIDATE FOR | BULLER SEAT OPPONENT LIKELY FOR , HON. P. C. WEBB TENTATIVE SELECTION BY NATIONAL PARTY [THK PRESS Special Servlce.l WESTPORT. September 13. Opposition to the Hon. P. C. Webb for «the Buller ' seat at the General Election is practically assured after a meeting of supporters of the National Party in Westport this evening, when Mr T. O. Maddison, of Wellington, was tentatively chosen. The selection will be open to the confirmation of country committees. Mr Maddison was born and educated in England, attending Cambridge University, and came to New Zealand 14 years ago. He served his apprenticeship in the mercantile marine and travelled extensively on the Continent and all over the world, especially studying economics. He has _ been mainly connected with advertising in New Zealand.
NATIONAL CANDIDATE FOR AUCKLAND CENTRAL
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, September 13. A ballot to select the official National Party ■ candidate to contest the Auckland Central seat at the forthcoming General Election was held to-night, and resulted in the selection.of Mr C. R. Dodd. The other nominee was Mr F. H. Hildreth. The seat is at present held by the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister for Internal Affairs. Mr Dodd is accountant to the Auckland branch of the firm of J. K. Mooney and Company, Ltd. He was educated at Wellington College, continuing his studies in England for two years before returning to New Zealand. In 1935. as a Democrat candidate, he unsuccessfully contested the Auckland Central seat.
DUNEDIN SOUTH SEAT NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE SELECTED (PEES? ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. September 13. The Rev. E. P. Aderman (Baptist) was to-night selected as the official National Party candidate for the Dunedin South seat at the General Election. .
