VARIANT OF BASEBALL GAME

MEETING OF “SOFT-BALL” ENTHUSIASTS

The American -game of ’’soft-ball” (a variant of baseball) should become popular in Christchurch if the aims are realised of the 45 interested persons who attended a meeting last evening of the Christchurch Baseball Association. Mr Charles Buckett presided. Representatives were present from the Training College, the Young Men’s Christian Association, and thq, Addington Workshops, as well as Mr D. R. Brown, of Canada, and Messrs Toronto and Stirling, Mormon elders from Utah.

Mr Buckett commended the game as being suitable for keeping footballers and players of winter games in good training during the summer, his words being endorsed by Mr C. Oliver. Mr Oliver suggested that football clubs be circularised in an effort to obtain adherents for the game, which, he said was ideal for the needs of the footballer in summer.

It was moved that a controlling body for “soft-ball” be formed in Christchurch since this game and not baseball was the one that had a good hold in other centres. There are 60 teams in Wellington and 10 in Dunedin. About five baseball teams will be turning out here on Saturday. Two delegates from each club will form the controlling body, which will meet next Saturday.
