HEIR HIS YOUNGER BROTHER CAREER AS ENGINEER AND FARMER Sir Walter Lovelace Clifford, who becomes the fourth baronet, is a son of the first baronet. An engineer by profession, he is 85 years of age, and nas lived at Fendalton for a nujnber of years. His heir is bis brother, Charles William, who resides at Market Drayton, England. , , The new baronet was born m wei lington in 1853 and was educated at Beaumont, in England. He was trained as a civil engineer and. for some time he was engaged on surveying the underground railways in London, he was an engineer on the Swansea docks. Coming to New Zealand, Sir Walter was appointed engineer of tne difficult section of the Midland railway line beyond Springfield. On the death of his father, he became a part owner of Flaxbourne station, which he managed with success until the larger part of it was acquired by the Government for closer settlement. The area sold included the present site of the town of Ward. He was in England during the war. after which he returned to the Dominion and took up his residence in Christchurch. He married, at Swansea, Miss Catherine Bath, who died some years ago. There were three daughters of the marriage—the late Mrs A. Brustad. Mrs W. Wallis (Wellyn Garden City, near London), and Mrs Shirreff-Hilton. who lives with her father at Fendalton.

In his younger days. Sir Walter Clifford was a most accomplished rider to hounds, and he is now a member of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club.
