A GOOD RUN OF WHITEBAIT
FISHERMEN AT MILFORD LAGOON
Whitebait was Temuka’s staple food over the week-end. Fishermen who have been making long vigils at the Milford lagoon at the mouth of the Opihi river for a few cups of whitebait a day were rewarded on Saturday by one of the best runs ever experienced. It was an early run, and ai l fishermen got good catches. Some who had filled all available receptacles were filling up sugar-sacks with the fish.
There was a general exodus ct fishermen from Temuka when the news spread, and many stayed up the whole night, and some again on Sunday night. They were not so lucky as those on Saturday, however, and one fisherman, who has been going o the lagoon for years, said that he had never 1 seen so much whitebait and that it was quite like old times. The whitebait was being sold in Temuka for 6d a cup.
