THE EUROPEAN SITUATION

EFFECT OF MILITARISM IN GERMANY ADDRESS BY DR. A. L. M. PERRY “England is prepared, and more prepared than some people believe; but militarism is less apparent there. If England becomes involved in a struggle it will be against a dictatorship, so distastefi’f to the Englishman.” This opinion was advanced by Dr. A. L. M. Perry, in an address to the Returned Soldiers’ Association, at a luncheon yesterday.

Dr, Perry said he believed it was true that the Individual peoples of Germany, Russia, and Italy did not want war, least of all with Great Britain. This desire, however, meant nothing when it came to a question of glorification of the dictator regime, under which the individual was crushed. It was no exaggeration to say that one in every half-dozen men met in Germany was in uniform. In the individual was seen the effect of this repression and rampant militarism. A visitor felt that he could never get a genuine expression of criticism. “Outwardly the German is friendly towards the Englishman,” he declared. “The hypnosis of the Hitler regime, however, will overcome this individual friendship. , Hitler is faced at present with more of an internal crisis, because a more questioning attitude has crept into the life of the people.”
