HUNDRED KILOMETRES CHAMPIONSHIP

GOOD PERFORMANCE BY C. W. SHILTON Interesting racing was seen on Saturday afternoon, when the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre conducted its 100 kilometres (62 i miles) championship. A good entryiwas received and the field was dispatched in two groups. A handicap was run in conjunction with the championship and the course was from Panama to Amberley, Balcaxrn, Sefton, Rangiora. and return by way of Wooden, The first grade riders in the firs'j&ass s ff-ars «•» at the Ashley bridge. R. W. Rondel had the misfortune to run Into some loose shingle and lose his group and chance in Shortly aC after leaving Amberley, Shilton pun&ured, leaving C. E. Sullivan and K. E. Johnston to ride on in. the lead, with I Forgie. following closely, while Shilton effected repairs. Here, the second group, which had started two minutes later, passed Shilton and also gained a considerable lead. Repairs completed, Shilton set off in hot pursuit and caught the second group in about four- miles After resting with this group for a while he set out after the leaders, whom he caught about a mile before the Ashley bridge, near Rangiora. For some unaccountable reason Sullivan and Forgie were not going at all well here, and Shilton set oft alone, to increase his lead to the finish. In all he rode 35 miles unpaced. E. B. Taylor. E. Rondel, and J. A. Brown were prominent in the second group, and after a brilliant effort over the concluding stages Taylor , gained second place in the chamnionship and in the handicap. The following are the results:— . Championship—C. W. Shilton. 2hr 51mm 15sec, 1; E. D. Taylor. 2hr 57min 53sec, 2; C. E. Sullivan, 2hr 59min 1 3-ssec. 3. Handicap—C. W.
