LATE SITTINGS LIKELY

Parliament Faces

Busy Week

MANY BILLS TO BE

DEALT WITH

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.)

WELLINGTON, September 11

As the Government is aiming to finish the session by Saturday, there will probably be some late sittings in the House of Representatives this week.

The programme of work includes 11 Government bills introduced last week, and this instalment will be augmented by several more which have still to make an appearance. However, most of the measures are likely to* have a rapid passage, for few of them contain anything of a contentious nature. The Supplementary Estimates of departmental expenditure have also to be introduced and approved.

The House will meet to-morrow for the first Monday sitting this session. Consideration will be given to bills on the order paper. These include: —The Dairy Industry Amendment Bill, providing for universal farm dairy instruction; the Land and Income Tax (Annual) Bill, fixing the ruling rates of, taxation: the King George the Fifth Memorial Fund Bill, authorising the appointment of a board to administer the fund; and the Statutes Amendment Bill and the Finance Bill. Measures still to be) introduced and passed before the session closes include a short Education Amendment Bill, a Samoan Amendment Bill, the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill, and the Appropriation Bill. There are several local bills on the i order paper or before the Local Bills Committee. An assurance that an opportunity would be found for consideration of these was given in the House on Friday by the actingleader, the Hon. P. Fraser. As all local bills are carefully examined by the committee before they come before the House their passage is not likely to make any serious inroads on the time of Parliament,
